Kaonic Atom Measurements with the SIDDHARTA-2 Experiment at the DA$Φ$NE accelerator

Abstract

Kaonic atoms provide a unique experimental tool to investigate low-energy strong interactions in systems containing strangeness and, through high-lying transitions, to test bound-state quantum electrodynamics. The SIDDHARTA-2 experiment at the DA$Φ$NE electron--positron collider performs high-precision X-ray spectroscopy of kaonic atoms using low-momentum charged kaons produced in $ϕ$-meson decays. Its primary goal is the study of kaonic deuterium through the measurement of X-ray transitions to the ground state, providing direct access to the low-energy $K^-d$ interaction. In parallel, SIDDHARTA-2 has carried out a broad experimental programme with gaseous targets, including kaonic helium-4 and kaonic neon, as well as measurements of high-$n$ transitions in intermediate-mass kaonic atoms formed in the materials of the experimental setup. In this paper, the main SIDDHARTA-2 measurements and their physics motivations are reviewed, together with the experimental strategy developed for kaonic deuterium and the future perspectives of the collaboration within the EXKALIBUR programme.

Jet-like dihadron correlations in OO and Ne--Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.36$ TeV with ALICE

Heavy-ion collisions are primarily studied to investigate the properties of hot and dense primordial nuclear matter, known as the quark--gluon plasma (QGP). However, recent observations of hydrodynamic flow--like behavior in pp and p--Pb collisions at the LHC suggest the possible formation of QGP droplets even in the smallest collision systems. To bridge the multiplicity gap between small and large systems and to examine the applicability of hydrodynamic descriptions, light-ion collisions have been studied for the first time at the LHC. This contribution presents dihadron correlation measurements in OO and Ne--Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.36$ TeV recorded with ALICE to explore possible medium effects. The width of the near-side correlation peak has been studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity, showing a multiplicity-dependent modification of the widths in various transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) intervals in OO and Ne--Ne collisions relative to pp and pO collisions. Further, the per-trigger normalized relative yields of near-side and away-side correlations, $I_{\rm AA}$, are measured in OO collisions for the first time, while in Ne--Ne collisions, the measurement is performed for the near side only. The observed suppression of the away-side associated yield in OO collisions relative to pp collisions is qualitatively consistent with jet--medium interactions, albeit with a weaker magnitude than in central Pb--Pb. However, the extent to which other effects, such as event-selection biases and cold-nuclear-matter effects, contribute to the observed suppression in the present kinematic regime remains an open question.

Direct measurement of the ${}^{23}\mathrm{Mg}(p, γ){}^{24}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction using the DRAGON recoil separator and a hybrid array of $γ$-ray detectors

Background: The $^{23}$Mg$(p,γ)^{24}$Al reaction plays a key role in nova nucleosynthesis, serving as a bridge between the Ne-Na and Mg-Al cycles and impacting synthesis of a wide variety of nuclides. It is crucial that the rate of this reaction be well constrained by experimental data, in particular the properties of the key resonance at $E_{\mathrm{cm}}\approx480$ keV, which dominates the rate at nova temperatures. Purpose: Our study aims to improve experimental constraints on the energy and strength of the key $E_{\mathrm{cm}}\approx480$ keV $^{23}$Mg$(p,γ)^{24}$Al resonance through a new direct measurement of its strength and energy. Methods: We used a $^{23}\mathrm{Mg}$ radioactive beam to directly observe capture into the $E_{\mathrm{cm}}\approx480$ keV resonance in inverse kinematics. The $^{24}\mathrm{Al}$ recoils were selected by the DRAGON recoil separator, and coincident $γ$ rays were measured in a hybrid $\mathrm{LaBr}_3/\mathrm{CeBr}_3/\mathrm{BGO}$ scintillator array. The $^{24}\mathrm{Al}$ singles yield was used to determine the resonance strength, while the time difference between the coincident $γ$ rays and the incident beam was used to determine the resonance energy. Results: We obtained a strength of $ωγ=38(7)$ meV and an energy of $E_{\mathrm{cm}}=478.8(26)$ keV for the key astrophysical $^{23}\mathrm{Mg}(p,γ)^{24}\mathrm{Al}$ resonance. Conclusions: Our reported strength is in excellent agreement with the previously reported direct measurement, as well as shell model calculations. Our energy is in good agreement with earlier indirect measurements. Reaction rate calculations incorporating our results indicate that the $^{23}\mathrm{Mg}(p,γ)^{24}\mathrm{Al}$ rate is constrained to a $1σ$ up/down factor of 1.5 or smaller in the nova temperature range of 0.2--0.4 GK.

Differential measurements of $γγ\toττ$ and constraints on $τ$-lepton electromagnetic moments in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ATLAS

This paper presents the first differential fiducial measurements of $γγ\toττ$ using 1.93 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Events in which one of the $τ$-leptons decays into a muon and two neutrinos $τ\toν_τ\barν_μμ$ are selected and are categorized into three regions by the presence of an electron or either one or three charged-particle track(s) from the second $τ$-lepton decay. The measurement is performed in events where both Pb ions remain intact and no neutrons are emitted. Differential cross-sections are measured for seven variables in three fiducial regions at particle level. The measurements are compared to theory predictions with different photon flux models and spin correlation effects. For the fiducial region with one muon and one electron in the final state, comparisons to next-to-leading-order electroweak predictions are also made. The transverse momentum ($p_\text{T}$) of the decay muon, the $p_\text{T}$ of the visible decay particles of the other $τ$-lepton, the total $p_\text{T}$, invariant mass, and pseudorapidity of the visible particles from the di-$τ$ system, and the rapidity and acoplanarity of the visible decay particles from either $τ$-lepton are measured. A maximum-likelihood fit to the muon transverse-momentum distributions in the three regions before unfolding is performed to extract the $τ$-lepton anomalous magnetic moment $a_τ$ and electric dipole moment $d_τ$, the latter for the first time in heavy ion collisions. The observed 95% confidence level intervals are $-0.057 <a_τ< 0.035$ and $|d_τ|< 2.7 \times 10^{-16}~e\text{cm}$.}
