A Density-Matrix Formulation of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra for Møller-Plesset and Configuration Interaction Methods

Abstract

We reformulate the overlap of wave-function derivatives that defines the atomic axial tensors (AATs) and velocity-gauge atomic polar tensors (VG-APTs) used to compute vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) rotatory strengths. In place of our earlier determinant-level derivatives, the new approach expresses these tensors as contractions involving molecular-orbital derivative integrals, perturbed and unperturbed one- and two-electron density matrices, and dot products of the perturbed correlated wave-function amplitudes. Following the elegant treatment of the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction by Gauss and co-workers, the formulation holds for any real, normalized CI-like wave function. The two-electron density contribution vanishes exactly, because one perturbation is real (nuclear) and the other imaginary (magnetic field or momentum); this removes multiple terms from our earlier AAT and VG-APT expressions for second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and configuration interaction singles and doubles (CISD). We also present a simplified form of the origin-independent length-gauge [LG(OI)] rotatory strength that avoids the singular-value decomposition of the outer product of the length-gauge APT and VG-APT vectors for each mode, and that clarifies how the LG(OI) and velocity-gauge rotatory strengths are related. Applying the density-based AATs and VG-APTs to ($P$)-hydrogen peroxide, (\textit{S})-methyloxirane, and (\textit{S})-3-chloro-1-butyne, we find that discrepancies among the gauges arise chiefly from basis-set incompleteness in the VG-APT. The charge-sum rule serves as a useful measure of that incompleteness, independent of the correlation method.

Full-data accuracy with fewer labels for training and fine-tuning machine-learning force fields

Machine-learning force fields (MLFFs) are reliable only near their training distribution, making efficient construction of diverse training sets a major bottleneck for both train-from-scratch and foundation fine-tuning workflows. Active learning can reduce this cost, but standard model-committee uncertainty is impractical for foundation MLFFs because each committee member requires a separate fine-tuning run. We present an active-learning workflow based on last-layer-projection regression (LLPR), a forward-pass-cheap per-configuration uncertainty estimator. Across molecular, condensed-phase, and electrolyte systems, LLPR identifies compact, high-value training sets that recover full-data accuracy using only a small fraction of electronic-structure labels. In foundation-model fine-tuning, LLPR-selected configurations approach the practical fine-tuning ceiling with substantially fewer labels than random selection. In iterative electrolyte fine-tuning, LLPR detects unphysical local coordination before new labelling, calibrates uncertainty in force-error units, and supports retrospective convergence monitoring. The resulting models reproduce reference density and Li--O coordination structure, providing a scalable uncertainty-quantification strategy across MLFF training regimes.

Interference between multiple photoionization pathways in chiral molecules: Converging continuum results in Gaussian bases

An accurate description of photoionization observables is a central challenge for theoretical models of molecular photoionization. Within standard electronic-structure approaches, the continuum states are represented by unoccupied Hartree-Fock orbitals expanded in Gaussian basis sets. Since these basis sets are optimized for bound states, computed observables may exhibit a noticeable basis-set dependence. Here, we augment these basis sets with diffuse functions and investigate the convergence of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), anisotropy parameters, and the forward backward ionization time delay in the multiphoton ionization of randomly oriented methyloxirane molecules. All observables converge systematically with the number of added diffuse functions, resolving previously observed basis-set discrepancies and indicating that the augmented basis sets provide a more accurate representation of the intermediate continuum states. In particular, our fully ab initio calculations yield forward-backward time delays in qualitative agreement with recent measurements, for which previous theoretical descriptions relied on empirical modeling. Diffuse augmentation thus provides a computationally efficient and transferable route to converged Gaussian-basis calculations for molecular multiphoton photoionization.

Parity-equivariant prediction of conformer-resolved electronic circular dichroism spectra accelerates absolute configuration assignment

Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) is a key experimental probe for assigning the absolute configuration of chiral molecules, but interpreting measured spectra often requires costly time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The few existing machine learning methods for ECD prediction are faster, but their accuracy still falls well short of that required for experimental applications. Here we introduce PhysECD, a parity-aware E(3)-equivariant framework that builds the spectrum from its underlying quantum-chemical quantities, ensuring correct chiroptical symmetry by construction. To improve generalization and support experimental applications, we construct SCECD, a conformer-resolved dataset of 578,104 computed spectra spanning diverse natural products with one to five stereocentres. PhysECD predicts ECD spectra from conformer geometries in milliseconds, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy on the CMCDS benchmark and SCECD. Validation against 77 experimental spectra further demonstrates that PhysECD can serve as a fast alternative to TDDFT for assigning the absolute configuration of complex chiral molecules.
