Knot Floer complexes of generalized L-space knots

Abstract

In this paper, we study height 4 knots, which generalize L-space knots and almost L-space knots studied by Ozsváth--Szabó, Baldwin--Sivek, and Binns. A knot $K\subset S^3$ is called a height $m$ knot if $\operatorname{rank} \widehat{HF}(S^3_n(K))-n=m$ for all integers $n\geq 2g(K)-1$, where $\widehat{HF}$ is the hat version of Heegaard Floer homology introduced by Ozsváth--Szabó. In particular, height 0 and height 2 knots are exactly L-space knots and almost L-space knots, respectively. We prove that the knot Floer complex $CFK^\infty(S^3,K)$ of a height 4 knot $K$ admits a basis that is horizontally and vertically simplified--an hv-basis for short. Moreover, we show that under such an hv-basis, the horizontal and vertical differentials fall into six cases, generalizing the results for L-space knots and almost L-space knots. The hv-basis of the knot Floer complex of $K$ can determine, via an explicit algorithm, the immersed curve of Hanselman-Rasmussen-Watson for the knot complement of $K$. Consequently, our results facilitate further exploration of computations of $\widehat{HF}$ for the gluing of two height 4 knot complements.

Handle decompositions and Kirby diagrams for the complement of plane algebraic curves

The complement of plane algebraic curves are well studied from topological and algebro-geometric viewpoints. In this paper, we will describe the explicit handle decompositions and the Kirby diagrams for the complement of plane algebraic curves. The method is based on the notion of braid monodromy. We refined this technique to obtain handle decompositions and Kirby diagrams.

Free maps in critical dimension on low-dimensional tori and closed surfaces

We present a method to build free immersions in critical dimension on $m$-tori for $m = 2, 3, 4, 5$ by using a factorization trick inspired by tori immersions in critical dimension. As an application, we show that the set of smooth free maps from a closed surface $M$ to $\mathbb R^5$ is nonempty. In particular, every closed surface embeds freely in $\mathbb R^5$. Finally, we find the homotopy invariants of free maps in our environment and study which invariants are achieved by our maps.

The Smoothability of Embedded Surfaces in 4-Manifolds Under Stabilizations

We study the smooth stabilization number of a locally flat embedded surface in a smooth $4$-manifold, defined as the minimum number of connected sums with $S^2\times S^2$ needed to make the surface topologically isotopic to a smooth embedding. We prove that a nonsmoothable locally flat surface in a closed, simply connected smooth $4$-manifold becomes smoothable after a single stabilization if its homology class is primitive and noncharacteristic and its complement has abelian fundamental group. This yields infinitely many examples of nonsmoothable surfaces with smooth stabilization number one. We also exhibit examples for which a single stabilization produces infinitely many pairwise smoothly nonisotopic representatives in the same topological isotopy class. In contrast, we construct a locally flat genus-eight surface representing $6h$ in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ whose smooth stabilization number is exactly two. More generally, we show that smooth stabilization numbers of locally flat embedded surfaces in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ are unbounded.
