Lévy-stable pion emission sources in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV from the vHLLE+SMASH hybrid model

Abstract

Revealing the space-time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions is a central challenge, as this information is encoded in the properties of particles emitted at freeze-out. We reconstruct the pion emission source in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV (0-5% centrality), simulated with the vHLLE+SMASH hybrid framework, which combines a Glauber Monte Carlo initial state, (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics, and a hadronic afterburner describing resonance decays and hadronic rescattering. Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry is used to characterize identical-pion pair sources, which can also be reconstructed directly from the last scattering points of final-state particles in simulations. The projected pair-separation distributions in the Bertsch-Pratt out, side, and long directions are analyzed using a three-dimensional Levy-stable parameterization. Over the investigated fit range, extending to approximately 100 fm, a single Levy-stable function provides a satisfactory description of the distributions. The extracted Levy index, alpha approximately 1.5-1.6, is below the Gaussian value of 2 and increases slowly with transverse mass mT. At larger pair separations, the total source deviates from the fitted distribution, consistent with a halo contribution from long-lived resonance decays. Short-lived resonance decays and hadronic rescattering may contribute to the non-Gaussian shape through the Levy-walk phenomenon. The HBT radii Rout, Rside, and Rlong decrease with mT, qualitatively consistent with collective expansion. These results demonstrate the utility of Levy-stable femtoscopy for connecting hadronic-stage dynamics in hybrid simulations with experimentally accessible observables.

Triaxiality and Vibrational Modes in Strongly Deformed Nuclei

Low-energy vibrational excitations associated with the fluctuation of quadrupole deformed shapes are discussed within the framework of state-of-the-art Configuration Interaction calculations, actually performed via the Quasi-particle Vacua Shell Model version of the Monte Carlo Shell Model. Recently, low-lying $γ$ bands in heavy strongly deformed nuclei were shown to be rotational $K^P$ = 2$^+$ excitations of triaxially deformed states (see T. Otsuka {\it et al.}, Eur. Phys. J. A 61, 126 (2025)) rather than vibrational excitations as traditionally interpreted. We present additional illustrations as to how the E2 excitation strength to the gamma band changes as the triaxial deformation parameter $γ$ increases, as a systematic indicator for the evolving triaxiality. This is a part of a general formulation of E2 properties of strongly-deformed triaxial states obtained within the quantum many-body scheme. Once the triaxial picture is clarified as a whole, it is important to identify possible low-lying $γ$ and other vibrational excitations and to characterize the excitation energy at which they emerge. Focusing on two typical examples, $^{166}$Er and $^{162}$Dy, vibrational states are indeed identified above the $γ$ band using an extended version of the so-called T-plot. Notable agreement with experiment is seen for the $γ$-vibrational band in $^{166}$Er and for the $β$-vibrational band in $^{162}$Dy, regarding energy levels and $E2$ transitions. The phenomenon of shape coexistence is also shown to produce low-lying states below such vibrational band heads. These results suggest novel and rich structures in heavy deformed nuclei, opening doors to future dedicated studies.

Spin-Dependent Nucleon-Nucleus Interactions Constrained by Neutron Observables and Their Impact on Near-Barrier Proton Fusion

We investigate the role of spin-dependent nucleon--nucleus interactions in nuclear reactions. To this end, we use neutron spin observables to constrain the dominant central spin-spin form factors and then apply the corresponding like-channel interactions to near-barrier fusion in the $p+{}^{93}$Nb system. The interactions are constructed within a folding framework based on a finite-range effective nucleon-nucleon force and organized in terms of radial form factors associated with their spin-spin, tensor, and spin-orbit components. Neutron spin observables in the $n$ + $^{27}$Al, $^{59}$Co, and $^{93}$Nb target systems are analyzed within a distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) framework {to examine the sign and scale of the central spin-spin contribution and the assembled operator conventions.} The calculation reproduces the observed sign systematics of the neutron spin observables for the three targets, consistent with the dominant central spin-spin contribution in the adopted model. The unlike-channel (neutron--proton) interaction constrained by neutron scattering is then reconstructed for the corresponding like-channel (proton--proton) interaction and applied to a coupled-channels description of near-barrier fusion for the $p+{}^{93}$Nb system. The retained real spin-dependent interactions lead only to a weak modification of the effective barrier and a very small change in the unpolarized fusion cross section within the present model. The present work thus connects the neutron-scattering constraints on the operator conventions with the fusion calculation in the proton channel, and estimates the scale of the corresponding real spin-dependent correction in near-barrier fusion.

Origin of a peculiar property of four particles in a $j=9/2$ shell

It was found previously that in the system of four particles of the same kind in an angular momentum $j = 9/2$ shell, the energies $E_I$ of four particular levels with angular momenta $I = 4$, 6, 10, and 12, are related by $E_I = a + b I(I+1)$, where $a$ and $b$ depend only on the two-body interaction. Here, I discuss observable implications of this regularity and analyse in detail its origin.
