Recovering the Topology of a Real Plane Algebraic Curve by Tropical Homotopy
Abstract
We present a tropical homotopy method for computing the numbers of ovals and unbounded components of a real plane algebraic curve, together with the pairing of its ends at infinity. Under explicit support and nondegeneracy assumptions, the homotopy starts from a tropical patchwork and encounters finitely many events. At Morse event points, the curve changes by local surgery. To determine the global attachments, we follow descending separatrices of a single gradient-like field to a fixed collection of base curves. The order of their landing points defines a finite combinatorial state, updated by local rules that also handle events at infinity and simultaneous event points. This recovers component data without tracing the intervening curves. For the dequantizing lifting, given by the negative logarithms of coefficient magnitudes, we prove an explicit event window when the lifting is generic. For fixed support and coefficient signs, with independent, identically distributed log-normal magnitudes, the expected number of events is bounded by a constant divided by the standard deviation of the logarithms. When all event points are Morse, correctness is conditional on complete, correctly classified event data, a sufficiently small starting parameter, and correctly labelled and ordered landing points. A numerical implementation illustrates its behaviour on sparse curves of high degree and on coefficients spanning many scales; these conditions are not certified.
