Properties of Oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch stars in the LMC and the Milky Way
Abstract
We investigate the properties of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (OAGB) stars in the LMC and the Milky Way using infrared (IR) color-magnitude diagrams, two-color diagrams, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and variability data. The observed SEDs are analyzed with radiative transfer models to constrain the properties of the central stars and their circumstellar dust shells and to estimate distances. For OAGB stars in the LMC, whose distance is well established, a set of representative OAGB models is derived by fitting theoretical SEDs to the observations. These models are subsequently applied to Galactic OAGB stars, for which Gaia DR3 parallaxes are often uncertain, to estimate distances from SED fitting. For Galactic Mira variables, distances are also determined using a period-magnitude relation calibrated with Mira stars in the LMC. We find that OAGB stars in the two galaxies exhibit broadly similar IR properties, and that the theoretical models successfully reproduce the observed IR characteristics, despite the extreme rarity of heavily obscured objects with optically thick silicate dust envelopes in the LMC. We further examine Galactic OAGB stars associated with OH, H2O, and SiO masers, including the relationship between absolute OH maser fluxes and IR colors. In addition, we investigate the IR properties of Mira-type OAGB stars and characterize their long-term variability using archival observations together with 16 years of WISE photometric data. Finally, we present a new catalog of 70,877 Galactic OAGB stars, providing a more reliable and comprehensive dataset for future studies.
