Ubiquity of ocular resonances in scattering phenomena
Abstract
We demonstrate how quantum mechanical scattering off a potential with a characteristic surface generically leads to a family of resonances in the complex momentum plane clustered near a roughly eye-shaped curve centered on the origin and formed by anti-Stokes lines. A particularly interesting class are potentials that are more singular than $1/r^2$ at short distance, where the scattering surface is the separatrix between captured and deflected classical trajectories. These resonances have been recently shown to play an important role in low energy nucleon scattering, and can be related to ``creeping waves'' familiar from classical diffractive scattering and analyzed by means of Regge poles.
