Corner Regularity and Asymptotics for the Two-Dimensional Radiation Transport Equation

Abstract

The regularity of solutions to the two-dimensional radiation transport equation plays a central role in understanding the behavior of scalar flux near geometric corners. In a previous study of Kaper's corner singularity problem, the physical transport kernel was decomposed into its principal inverse-distance singularity and a lower-order remainder, reducing the corner asymptotic analysis to the question of whether the scalar flux possesses sufficient continuity to justify differentiation of the associated singular potential. The required regularity, however, remained unresolved. In this paper, we establish a sharp modulus-of-continuity estimate for the scalar flux generated by the physical transport kernel and prove the estimate $ω_ϕ(h)=O\!\left(h\log(D/h)\right)$, which implies Dini continuity. This estimate yields absolute convergence of the fluctuation term arising in the differentiated principal potential and permits a rigorous differentiation formula for transport solutions. Using this regularity framework, we derive the fixed-angle asymptotic behavior of the scalar flux and its first derivatives near a rectangular corner. For every fixed interior ray, the gradient exhibits logarithmic growth, while the scalar flux admits an $r\log(1/r)$ correction with an explicitly identified coefficient determined by the corner values of the flux and source. The analysis shows that a rectangular corner does not generate a singularity stronger than the logarithmic first-derivative singularity already present in smooth-boundary transport theory. Numerical calculations on benchmark problems are consistent with the theoretical predictions. These results provide a rigorous resolution of the regularity issue underlying Kaper's corner singularity problem and establish a mathematical framework for corner asymptotics in two-dimensional radiation transport.

Nonexistence results for the semilinear wave equation on graphs

We investigate the semilinear wave equation with potential on weighted graphs. We establish sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of global-in-time solutions. Both nonnegative and sign-changing solutions are considered. In particular, the proof for sign-changing solutions relies on a novel technique for this type of result.

Application of Onsager's Variational Principle to the Navier-Stokes Equations

In this note we propose a basic $L^2$-based approach for studying the global and local energy equalities of the incompressible 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the standard energy class on $\mathbb{T}^3 \times (0,T]$. Motivated by L. Onsager's principle of least dissipation of energy (1931), we give a new sufficient condition for the energy equalities in terms of the limit of a sequence of minimizers. In particular, we show that the equalities are attained if this limit is non-vanishing. We observe that the indeterminacy in the vanishing case is reminiscent of turbulence-driven energy transfer dominating other transport processes.

Hyperbolic Monge-Ampère Equation on a Cylinder: Well-Posedness and Stability

This paper develops a rigorous analytic framework for the hyperbolic Monge-Ampère equation on strip-like domains, which model wrinkled patterns in thin elastic sheets. Our work addresses the rigid side of the classical rigidity-flexibility dichotomy by defining this regime not by high smoothness, but by the more fundamental property of partial convexity. The hodograph transformation is the natural tool for this setting, as its validity is predicated on partial convexity. It converts the nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation into a linear damped wave equation, allowing us to formulate a well-posed Cauchy-Goursat problem. A key challenge is the corner singularity that arises where characteristic and non-characteristic boundary data meet. To resolve this, we develop a parametrix-corrector decomposition that captures the solution's inherent singular behavior. This method recasts the problem as a singular Volterra integral equation, for which we prove the existence and uniqueness of a new class of hodograph weak solutions. Finally, we derive energy estimates to establish the quantitative stability of these rigid solutions under perturbations of the underlying curvature function.
