Exact bounded cohomology of measure-preserving homeomorphism groups of nonorientable hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract

Let $M$ be a closed, connected, non-orientable hyperbolic manifold, and let $μ$ be a good measure on $M$. Denote by $Homeo_0(M,μ)$ the identity component of the group of $μ$-preserving homeomorphisms. For every $d\geq2$, we prove that $\dim\overline{EH}_b^d\bigl(Homeo_0(M,μ)\bigr)=\infty$, where $\overline{EH}_b^d$ denotes reduced exact bounded cohomology in degree $d$.

The symmetry group of Turk's head knots

For p, q >= 3 with gcd(p,q) = 1 we show that the symmetry group of the Turk's head knot Th(p,q), the closure of the braid (sigma_1 sigma_2^{-1} sigma_3 sigma_4^{-1} ... sigma_{p-1}^{+-1})^q, is the dihedral group of order 4q. This proves Conjecture R of Di Prisa and Şavk for q >= 3; the case p = 3 is due to Sakuma and Weeks. The argument is diagrammatic: by the flyping theorem of Menasco and Thistlethwaite, the symmetries of a knot with a prime, reduced alternating diagram without non-trivial flypes are the symmetries of the diagram (we write out a proof for the diagrams at hand), and we show that the standard diagram of Th(p,q) has no non-trivial flypes and exactly 4q symmetries. The chirality of Th(p,q) for even p, which also follows from a theorem of Murasugi, is visible in the group. We compare the argument with the geometric one of Sakuma and Weeks for p = 3.

Singular Loci of SL2(C)-Representation Varieties of Torus Knot Groups

Let $T(q,p)=\langle x,y\mid x^p=y^q\rangle$, where $p,q>1$ are relatively prime, and let \[ R=\Hom(T(q,p),\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb C)). \] We compute the integral homology of the singular locus of $R$. We show that this locus has complex dimension $2$ and is a disjoint union of $μ=(p-1)(q-1)$ smooth affine surfaces, each homotopy equivalent to the two-dimensional sphere. Consequently, \[ H_0(\Sing R;\Z)\cong H_2(\Sing R;\Z)\cong\Z^μ, \] and all remaining homology groups vanish. Thus both nonzero Betti numbers equal the first Betti number of the Milnor fiber of the plane curve singularity $z^p+w^q=0$, namely its Milnor number $μ$.

Conway polynomials of $Th(p,q)$ and $Th(q,p)$: a proof of Takemura's conjecture

Takemura conjectured that the Conway polynomials $\sum a_\ell z^\ell$ of the Turk's head link $Th(p,q)$ and $\sum b_\ell z^\ell$ of $Th(q,p)$ satisfy $a_\ell=b_\ell$ for $\ell\equiv0,1\pmod 4$ and $a_\ell=-b_\ell$ for $\ell\equiv2,3\pmod4$, and proved it for $q=2,3$. We prove it for all $p,q\ge1$, knots and links. Equivalently, $\nabla_{Th(q,p)}(z)=c\,\nabla_{Th(p,q)}(iz)$ with $c=1$ if $\gcd(p,q)$ is odd and $c=-i$ if it is even. The proof combines a product formula $\nabla_{Th(p,q)}(z)^2=\prod_{j=1}^{p-1}\prod_{k=1}^{q-1}(z^2+2\cos\frac{2πk}{q}-2\cos\frac{2πj}{p})$, which comes from the reduced Burau representation, with the leading coefficients, read off the Seifert surface of the closed braid.
