A novel mechanism for spontaneous ExB shear layer formation in scrape-off-layer plasmas

Abstract

We present a novel mechanism for spontaneous shear-flow generation in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of magnetically confined plasmas, arising at abrupt changes in the sheath connection length $L_\parallel$. Such transitions occur naturally in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. Applying a critical balance treatment for interchange turbulence, we find that $L_\parallel$ sets the equilibrium pressure gradient and hence the radial electric field away from the transition, producing an $E\times B$ shear around the transition comparable to the turbulence growth rate. High-fidelity simulations are shown to be consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Geodesic torsion of the magnetic field line and other predictors of coil non-planarity in QI stellarators

Stellarator magnetic fields are often realized with non-planar modular coils with their out-of-plane bending being one of the main engineering challenges. We ask whether the non planarity of the fialment can be predicted from the equilibrium alone. We look at a dataset of coils for stellarator equilibira and find that the geodesic torsion of the magnetic field line is a strong and robust predictor in a wide range of coil feasibility requirements. We compare the performance of the geodesic torsion against other equilibrium and surface geometry properties and find it to be a superior predictorv hardly replaceable by other quantities we considered in this dataset. The ranking it induces also reproduces the ordering of four published configurations --- precise QA, precise QI at nfp 2 and 3, and W7-X. Our conclusions suggest that geodesic torsion of the magnetic field line may be considered as a cheap and robust candidate for a stage-one non-planarity proxy.

Experimental evidence of forward energy transfer induced by core-edge coupling in multiscale tokamak turbulence

Turbulence in magnetically confined plasmas is inherently quasi-two-dimensional and can exhibit both inverse and forward energy transfer across scales. Experimental evidence for cross-scale energy transfer in the hot plasma core has, however, remained scarce. Understanding such energy transfer is crucial because it governs turbulent transport, which directly impacts confinement quality of fusion plasmas. Here we report experimental evidence consistent with forward energy transfer associated with core-edge coupling in tokamak turbulence. We combined multichannel collective Thomson scattering (CTS) and radially localized Doppler backscattering (DBS) to resolve cross-scale fluctuation dynamics. The results reveal that a quasi-coherent mode (QCM) originating from the edge is also present in the core and resonantly couples with broadband turbulence, producing significant forward energy transfer and characteristic secondary instabilities. These combined measurements indicate that quasi-two-dimensional tokamak turbulence can support a net energy transfer from ion to electron scales through cross-scale wave-wave interactions, contrary to the inverse cascade paradigm of idealized two-dimensional turbulence. Such a plasma regime is attractive for fusion reactors, as it avoids large edge-localized modes (ELMs) that damage first-wall components and maintains high confinement quality even in the presence of high-Z impurities.

Self-gravitating isothermal equilibria in Eddington-inspired Born--Infeld gravity: exact planar sheets and the Bonnor--Ebert critical mass

We study self-gravitating fluid equilibria in the Newtonian limit of Eddington-inspired Born--Infeld (EiBI) gravity, in which the Poisson equation acquires a term proportional to the Laplacian of the density. We show that this term is equivalent, for arbitrary flows, to an effective pressure $p+χρ^2/8$, so that equilibrium and radial stability reduce exactly to Newtonian problems with a modified equation of state. For pressure-bounded isothermal spheres we compute the EiBI generalization of the Bonnor--Ebert critical mass as a function of the single parameter $\varepsilon=χP_{\rm ext}/4c_s^4$, and confirm each change of stability with a radial-pulsation analysis. Near $\varepsilon=0$ the critical mass grows as $M_{\rm BE}(1+5.74\,\varepsilon)$. For $\varepsilon>0.0302$ no isothermal sphere is radially unstable, so a positive EiBI parameter removes the Bonnor--Ebert instability; for smaller positive $\varepsilon$ a stable high-density branch supported by the EiBI pressure follows the unstable one. For $\varepsilon<-0.154$ the mass limit is set instead by the vanishing of the central effective sound speed, and is a loss of equilibrium rather than an instability. In planar geometry the same reduction yields an exact first integral, closed-form isothermal sheets with a maximum column density $2c_s^2/\sqrt{πG|χ|}$ for $χ<0$, and a complete classification of adiabatic $γ=3$ sheets.
