How Much of Cross-Subject EEG Emotion Recognition Is Stimulus Memorization?

Abstract

Cross-subject EEG emotion recognition now reports accuracies above 90% on stimulus-defined benchmarks such as SEED, and the field has examined several ways in which such numbers can be inflated, attributing inflation to subject identity, to data partitioning, and to repeated stimulus presentation. We observe that one variable has been left out. On these datasets the emotion label is assigned to the video at design time, so any encoder that recovers which video was shown obtains the label for free. We adapt three representation-level shortcut diagnostics to a cohort of published contrastive cross-subject encoders, and find that stimulus identity is linearly recoverable at six to fifteen times chance. We then measure its impact on the reported accuracy by holding out subjects and stimuli jointly, and find that each released classifier loses two to forty-four points once the test videos are unseen, so a headline obtained under subject hold-out alone is not a measure of cross-subject emotion decoding.

Handover-Aware Power Minimization for Networked LEO Satellite Communications: Joint Cooperative Beamforming and Scheduling

Networked low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations enabled by inter-satellite links offer a promising path toward ubiquitous broadband non-terrestrial services, as cooperative transmission increases the received power and suppresses interference. However, fast orbital motion induces frequent handovers, which cost energy and transmission time, while the limited number of radio-frequency chains per satellite couples user scheduling with cooperative beamforming. In this paper, we investigate handover-aware power-efficient downlink transmission in networked LEO systems under statistical channel state information. Specifically, we first introduce a two-segment frame structure that separates the handover procedure from user-plane transmission, and propose a power consumption model that captures the energy to establish each new satellite-user link and the transmission time lost during its handover. We then formulate a per-frame network-wide power minimization problem that jointly optimizes cooperative beamforming and user scheduling, and develop an iterative algorithm that combines a reweighted $\ell_2$ surrogate with a penalty-based relaxation and a fractional-programming inner loop, which yields convex subproblems. Simulation results with Red Sea ship traffic demonstrate that, at $25$~Mbps per user, the proposed design needs 14\% less power than distance-based cooperative scheduling and 15\% less than a joint design that ignores the established links, while non-cooperative transmission meets the rate requirements in only 14\% of the frames.

Evolving Intelligent Complex Systems via Intellicise Networks: Architecture, Technologies, and Pathways

Future engineering infrastructures are evolving into large-scale, open, heterogeneous, and wirelessly interconnected complex systems. These systems present significant challenges in optimizing network resource utilization, managing high-dimensional information spaces, and accommodating diverse business requirements. Intellicise networks, characterized by Intent-driven operation, semantic-native capability, and distributed intelligence, offer a promising paradigm for enabling such intelligent complex systems. We provide a systematic exploration of future intelligent complex systems from the perspective of intellicise networks. Specifically, we propose a cross-domain intelligent communication network architecture based on intellicise networks, grounded in information theory, systems theory, game theory, and cybernetics. The architecture comprises a cross-layer organizational framework, multi-functional planes, and novel information flows. The cross-layer framework defines the vertical evolution from perception and cognition to decision, while the control, user, data, computation, intelligence, and security planes deliver horizontal intellicise capabilities. Moreover, data, knowledge, model, and task flows interconnect the various layers and planes, forming a closed-loop process that derives simplicity from high-level intelligene while concurrently pursuing enhanced. Building on this architecture, we review key enabling technologies, tracing their evolution from semantic extraction to intent understanding, from heterogeneous resource integration to self-configuration and self-optimization, from generative artificial intelligence (AI) to agentic AI, and from embodied AI to symbodied AI. Additionally, we present a case study on intellicise networks for embodied agent communications and discuss representative applications and services for intelligent complex systems.
