Non-expansive maps between unit balls that send the sphere onto the sphere are linear isometries

Abstract

Let $X$, $Y$ be real Banach spaces with closed unit balls $B_X$, $B_Y$ and unit spheres $S_X$, $S_Y$. We prove that every non-expansive map $F\colon B_X\to B_Y$ with $F(S_X)\subseteq S_Y\subseteq F(B_X)$ is the restriction of a surjective linear isometry $X\to Y$. Consequently, a non-expansive bijection of $B_X$ onto itself that fails to be an isometry must map some point of $S_X$ into the open unit ball, so the plasticity of $B_X$ reduces to showing that non-expansive bijections preserve norm 1. The proof shows that $F$ is Fréchet differentiable at $0$ with a surjective linear isometry $T$ as its derivative, and then proves $T^{-1}F=\mathrm{id}$ using a quantitative rigidity lemma for non-expansive self-maps $H$ of $B_X$ satisfying $\|a+H(a)\|=2$ for $a\in S_X$; the latter relies on the Baillon-Bruck rate of asymptotic regularity for Krasnosel'skii-Mann iterations. As a corollary, the identity is extremal in the set of non-expansive self-maps of $B_X$ for every Banach space $X$, which together with a result of Bargetz, Dymond and Pirk shows that all surjective isometries of $B_X$ are extremal, answering a question of theirs, including the case of $L^1[0,1]$.

Paired kernels and truncated Toeplitz operators

This paper considers paired operators in the context of the Lebesgue Hilbert space $L^2$ on the unit circle and its subspace, the Hardy space $H^2$. The kernels of such operators, together with their analytic projections, which are generalizations of Toeplitz kernels, are studied. Inclusion relations between such kernels are considered in detail, and the results are applied to describing the kernels of finite-rank asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operators.

Kalton-Peck space is not isomorphic to its hyperplanes

Let $Z_2$ denote the real Kalton-Peck space. No hyperplane of $Z_2$ admits a complex structure, and $Z_2$ is even in the sense of Ferenczi-Galego. Therefore, $Z_2$ is not linearly isomorphic to its hyperplanes, solving a long-standing conjecture in Banach space theory. The argument uses the Kalton-Swanson symplectic form on $Z_2$, the Castillo-González-Pino Fredholm theorem in $Z_2$, and a special case of a mod-$2$ theorem of Li-Zhu on skew-adjoint Fredholm relations in symplectic spaces, for which a self-contained proof is included.

Norms of the Hilbert Matrix Operator on Some Analytic Function Spaces

For $\mathcal H:\mathcal B^α\to\mathcal B^α$ with $1<α<2$, we obtain an exact norm representation. In particular, the norm is given by an explicit Gamma-function formula for $1<α\leq3/2$, whereas for $3/2<α<2$ it strictly exceeds the corresponding Gamma-function expression. For $\mathcal H:\mathcal B^α\to\mathcal B^α_{\log}$, we determine the exact norm: it is equal to $3/2$ for $1<α\leq4/3$ and is given by an explicit Gamma-function formula for $4/3<α<2$. We also determine the exact norm of $\mathcal H:H^1\to H^1_{\log}$ and show that it is equal to $π$. Finally, for $0<α<1$, we determine the exact norm of $\mathcal H:H^\infty_α\to\mathcal B^{α+1}$, which is given by an explicit Gamma-function formula.
