A mean value formula for the p-Laplacian

Abstract

In this paper we introduce an asymptotic mean value formula of the form $u(x) - \B_ε^p (u) (x) =ε^2 Δ_p u(x) + o(ε^2)$ for the $p-$Laplacian, $\plap u := \nabla \cdot \big( |\nabla u |^{p-2} \nabla u \big)$. Here $\B_ε^p (u)$ is a nonlinear expression that involve the mean value and the surmemum/infimum of $u$ in suitable balls. This asymptotic mean value formula allows us to characterize viscosity solutions to equations with different homogeneities in different sets of variables, like $\plap^{x'} u(x)+\qlap^{x''}u(x)=f(x)$ (for $x=(x',x'') \in\mathbb{R}^d$, $x'=(x_1,...,x_n)$ and $x''=(x_{n+1,...,x_d})$), and the parabolic $p$-Laplace heat equation $\partial_t u (x,t)-Δ_p u(x,t)=0$. Moreover, the resulting asymptotic mean value formulas are related to two-player zero sum games whose value functions, characterized as the unique solution to the corresponding dynamic programming principle, converge as the parameter that controls the size of the steps in the game goes to zero, to the unique viscosity solution to the corresponding boundary value problem for the operator under consideration. Finally, we also include a Holder regularity result for $\plap^{x'} u(x)+\qlap^{x''}u(x)=0$ proved using the game theoretical interpretation of the problem.

On the dispersive estimates for the discrete Schrödinger equation on a honeycomb lattice

The discrete Schrödinger equation on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice is a fundamental tight-binding approximation model that describes the propagation of waves on graphene. For free evolution, we first show that the degenerate frequencies of the dispersion relation are completely characterized by three symmetric periodic curves (Theorem 2.1), and that the three curves meet at Dirac points where conical singularities appear (see Figure 2.1). Based on this observation, we prove the $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersion estimates for the linear flow depending on the frequency localization (Theorem 2.3). Collecting all, we obtain the dispersion estimate with $O(|t|^{-2/3})$ decay as well as Strichartz estimates. As an application, we prove small data scattering for a nonlinear model (Theorem 2.10). The proof of the key dispersion estimates is based on the associated oscillatory integral estimates with degenerate phases and conical singularities at Dirac points. Our proof is direct and uses only elementary methods.

Upper bound on heat kernels of finite particle systems of Keller-Segel type

We obtain an upper bound on the heat kernel of the finite particle approximation of the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis. The proof exploits a connection with certain non-local operators. We also obtain upper heat kernel bounds for related systems of interacting Brownian and stable particles that exhibit similar local blow-up effects.
