Scattering theory for bulk and surface waves in an impedance half-space, I: radiation conditions and a Rellich-type theorem

Abstract

We study the negative Laplacian on the half-space $\mathbb{R}^n_+$, $n \ge 3$, subject to a constant impedance (Robin) boundary condition with $α> 0$. The boundary then carries a bound transverse mode, and at each energy $E > 0$ the system propagates two channels with the distinct wavenumbers $\sqrt{E}$ and $\sqrt{E+α^2}$: bulk waves decaying like $|x|^{-(n-1)/2}$ and surface waves decaying like $|x'|^{-(n-2)/2}$. The two rates are not comparable pointwise. Each is critical for the Agmon-Hörmander space $\mathcal{B}^*$, however. This Part I treats the flat boundary, and its purpose is to develop, at that endpoint, the scattering theory of the two channels in full. We prove a limiting absorption principle $\mathcal{B} \to \mathcal{B}^*$, construct the generalized Fourier transform, derive an expansion of the resolvent at infinity in which the two channels appear in a single relation, characterize the solutions of $\mathcal{B}^*$ growth, and compute the scattering matrix. The radiation condition is imposed on the solution itself, with no decomposition into channels, and is shown to be equivalent to the vanishing of the incoming data. The main result is a Rellich-type theorem whose hypotheses are imposed only near infinity and which forces both channels to vanish simultaneously. The surface channel turns out to be rigid: its block of the scattering matrix is the identity and carries no information about $α$, so that on the band $-α^2 < E < 0$ the scattering matrix is trivial. The bulk block, by contrast, determines $α$.

On the dispersive estimates for the discrete Schrödinger equation on a honeycomb lattice

The discrete Schrödinger equation on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice is a fundamental tight-binding approximation model that describes the propagation of waves on graphene. For free evolution, we first show that the degenerate frequencies of the dispersion relation are completely characterized by three symmetric periodic curves (Theorem 2.1), and that the three curves meet at Dirac points where conical singularities appear (see Figure 2.1). Based on this observation, we prove the $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersion estimates for the linear flow depending on the frequency localization (Theorem 2.3). Collecting all, we obtain the dispersion estimate with $O(|t|^{-2/3})$ decay as well as Strichartz estimates. As an application, we prove small data scattering for a nonlinear model (Theorem 2.10). The proof of the key dispersion estimates is based on the associated oscillatory integral estimates with degenerate phases and conical singularities at Dirac points. Our proof is direct and uses only elementary methods.

Upper bound on heat kernels of finite particle systems of Keller-Segel type

We obtain an upper bound on the heat kernel of the finite particle approximation of the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis. The proof exploits a connection with certain non-local operators. We also obtain upper heat kernel bounds for related systems of interacting Brownian and stable particles that exhibit similar local blow-up effects.
