SN 2023iop: An Extreme 1987A-like Supernova and the Death of Very Massive Stars

Abstract

Supernova (SN) 1987A showed that some hydrogen-rich core-collapse supernovae (SNe) rise slowly to peak, defining a distinct subclass. Wide-field surveys have uncovered more extreme members, such as OGLE-2014-SN-73, SN 2020faa, and SN 2023vbw, that challenge neutrino-driven explosion models. We present ultraviolet-to-infrared, radio, X-ray, and spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2023iop at $z = 0.1020$, the most extreme 87A-like event to date. It rose for $\gtrsim88$ rest-frame days to $M_r \approx -20.1$ mag, also placing it among the hydrogen-rich superluminous SNe, and radiated $\gtrsim4\times10^{50}$ erg. Its spectra resemble those of typical Type II SNe and remain photospheric at $\sim330$ days post-maximum. Continuum polarization of 0.8-1.0% indicates an aspherical system. Hydrogen-rich pair-instability supernova (PISN) models of a $190~M_\odot$ star reproduce the light-curve up to 150 days after peak, but not the late-time emission. A late-time spectrum shows a feature near 7300 Å, tentatively identified as [Ni II] $λ$7378. The implied $\approx0.02~M_\odot$ of stable $^{58}$Ni is reached only in the most massive PISN models. The low-mass host galaxy ($\sim10^{8.2}~M_\odot$) is consistent with a metal-poor progenitor as required by the PISN channel. Fallback accretion reproduces the light-curve morphology, but not the colors. We consider a pair-instability explosion the most plausible scenario, with the late-time light-curve excess powered by circumstellar interaction, which shows no signatures in the spectra. SN 2023iop shows that the most luminous 87A-like events occupy an underexplored region of massive-star evolution.

Spectra and Ionization Efficiencies of Charged Decay Particles in Kilonova Ejecta

Ionization by radioactive decay products including $α$-particles, $β$-decay electrons, and fission fragments plays a central role in determining the nebular-phase ionization state and spectra of kilonovae. In this work, ionization cross sections, stopping powers, thermalization histories, and particle degradation spectra are calculated self-consistently for $α$-particles and fission fragments propagating through expanding kilonova ejecta. The treatment includes interactions with bound and free electrons, charge evolution of fission fragments, adiabatic energy losses, and particle spectra obtained from the continuous slowing-down approximation and Spencer--Fano formalism. The work per ion pair is evaluated for a range of ejecta compositions and ionization states. Despite the large differences in mass, charge, and injection energy between $β$-electrons, $α$-particles, and fission fragments, the resulting work per ion pair is found to be remarkably similar across all decay channels and target species considered. In particular, heavy-element ions exhibit nearly identical normalized ionization efficiencies for all decay products. This robustness arises because the ionization cross sections and stopping powers are governed by the same underlying collision physics, causing the ratio between ionization and energy loss to remain approximately constant over the relevant energy range. The results imply that the ionization state of late-time kilonova ejecta depends only weakly on the dominant radioactive decay channel, even in ejecta where $α$-decay and fission dominate the heating budget.

A Spectral-model-independent Diagnostic of Phase-resolved Spectral Convergence in Swift J0243.6+6124

We introduce a spectral-model-independent spectral-shape metric, $δ_{\rm rms}$, to probe phase-resolved spectral evolution in the Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124. The $δ_{\rm rms}$--luminosity relation reveals a reproducible convergence--redivergence behavior: spectra from two geometrically opposite pulse phases converge to near identity around $L_{\rm t}^{\ast}\sim8.8\times10^{37}\ \mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$, with a mean shape difference of only $\sim2\%$, and rediverge at higher luminosities, most prominently at higher energies. This strong phase-resolved spectral convergence coincides with a pulse-profile reversal and traces the same transition luminosities previously identified from broadband continuum evolution, including $L_{\rm t}\sim4.5\times10^{37}\ \mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$. These results suggest a possible luminosity-driven reweighting between a broadly distributed surface-reprocessed/reflected component and an increasingly important direct accretion-column contribution, while establishing $δ_{\rm rms}$ as a robust, spectral-model-independent diagnostic of radiation-geometry restructuring in bright accreting X-ray pulsars.

WFST Follow-up of S251112cm: Searching for an Optical Counterpart to a Subsolar-mass Compact-binary Merger Candidate

Electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave (GW) sources probe the properties, environments, and evolution of compact-object mergers. S251112cm belongs to an emerging class of GW candidates with possible subsolar-mass components. We present an optical counterpart search for S251112cm with the Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST). Observations began 20.2 hr after the GW trigger and lasted three nights, covering approximately 780 deg$^2$ and 51% of the localization probability in the updated skymap. Our search for newly emerging, rapidly evolving, off-nuclear optical transients yielded four candidates with host-galaxy distances broadly consistent with the GW distance estimate. All four evolve substantially more slowly than AT 2017gfo, ruling out an AT 2017gfo-like origin and disfavoring their association with S251112cm as rapidly evolving kilonova counterparts. Combining WFST and DECam increases the localization probability coverage to approximately 67%. Assuming the counterpart lies within this footprint, we constrain a grid of binary-neutron-star kilonova models. For viewing angles $θ_{\rm obs}<60^\circ$, with other parameters fixed to the AT 2017gfo best-fit values, models with dynamical ejecta mass $M_{\rm dyn}\gtrsim0.01 M_\odot$ or wind ejecta mass $M_{\rm wind}\gtrsim0.05 M_\odot$ are disfavored over most of the covered GW probability. Our phenomenological analysis further constrains rapidly evolving optical transients with $T_{\rm rise,1/2}\leq2$ days to peak absolute magnitudes fainter than approximately -13 mag. To our knowledge, WFST provides the strongest optical constraints to date in the northern sky on possible rapidly evolving counterparts to this new class of GW candidates with subsolar-mass components. The comparable depths and complementary sky coverage of WFST and DECam extend these constraints across more of the localization region at similar sensitivity.
