Finite convexification by Minkowski summation

Abstract

Let $A\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a nonempty compact set and let $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a nonempty compact convex set. We study the problem of when there exists $λ>0$ such that the Minkowski sum $A+λK$ is convex. First, we show that this finite convexification is equivalent to a uniform covering condition on the exposed sets of $A$ and $K$. We then show that another characterization is possible in terms of the covering radii of the iterated exposed sets after translating each exposed face of $K$ so that its relative centroid is $0$. In the case of convex polytopes, we show that it suffices to check the exposed sets in the first level of the iteration. We also study several special cases, such as strictly convex convexifiers, lower-dimensional convexifiers, strongly isomorphic polytopes, and the planar case.

Asymptotics of Constrained Quantization for Compactly Supported Measures

We study constrained quantization of a compactly supported probability $P$ on $\mathbb{R}^D$ by codebooks in a nonempty closed set $S$. For $0 0$ on a fixed source set $F$ bounds $Δ_{n,r}$ below by the classical $β$-power quantization cost of $ν_F=T_*(wP|_F)$. If $dν_F=\widehat w\,dη$ for a compactly supported reference probability $η$ and $\widehat w\in A_p(η)$, $1<p<\infty$, then $Δ_{n,r}\geν_F(\mathbb{R}^D)[\widehat w]_{A_p(η)}^{-1}q_{n,β/p}(η)^β$. These comparisons yield bounds for the quantization dimensions defined by $e_{n,r}-L_r$ and $Δ_{n,r}^{1/r}$, with distinct behavior at positive and zero baselines. Convex and uniformly prox-regular constraints supply the growth weights through their projection inequalities. Circle and lifted Cantor distributions give matching quadratic-excess rates, while rectifiable weighted projections give lower Zador estimates.

Notes on uniform contractions of congruent balls

In this note, we obtain stronger results on uniform contractions of intersections and unions of congruent balls, thereby extending previous partial confirmations of the Kneser-Poulsen conjecture in these settings. In addition, we establish Blaschke-Santaló-type inequalities for r-ball bodies.

Exponential improvements in Rado's covering problem

Let $B^d$ denote the $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball of unit radius. What is the largest constant $f(B^d) \in [0,1]$ with the property that every finite collection $\mathcal{C}$ of unit balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$ admits a disjoint sub-collection $\mathcal{S}$ occupying at least a fraction $f(B^d)$ of the volume of $\mathcal{C}$? This problem was first raised by T. Radó in 1928, for axis-parallel squares in the plane; the author was motivated by a classical covering lemma in real analysis due to Vitali. The case of Euclidean balls was first considered by R. Rado in 1949. Until last year the best known estimates on $f(B^d)$ for unit balls where very far apart: \[ (1+ε_d) 3^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2^{-d}, \] where $0<ε_d=o_{d\rightarrow \infty}(1)$. Recently, the authors of this note observed that an exponential improvement on the upper bound follows from the Kabatiansky--Levenshtein spherical code bound, while the lower bound was improved by a linear factor by C.~Xie and G.~Ge (see arxiv:2608.09744). The current best estimates for large $d$ are \[ c \cdot d \cdot 3^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2.447^{-d}, \] where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. Here we offer the first exponential improvement of the lower bound in almost 80 years, which narrows the gap to: \[ 2.910^{-d} \leq f(B^d) \leq 2.447^{-d}. \] Our method is constructive and yields a polynomial time algorithm for finding a disjoint sub-collection realizing the estimate. Moreover the same technique gives similar exponentially improved lower bounds for all symmetric convex bodies satisfying a uniform convexity assumption, e.g., $\ell^p$-balls for all $p\in (1,\infty)$.
