Vorticity growth beyond bounded relative vorticity for axisymmetric Euler flows without swirl

Abstract

We establish upper bounds for vorticity and related quantities in axisymmetric Euler flows without swirl in $\mathbb{R}^3$, assuming that the initial relative vorticity $ω_0/r$ belongs to $L^1\cap L^p$ with $3<p\le \infty$. For each fixed $p \in (3,\infty]$, we obtain polynomial-in-time upper bounds for the radial moments, the radial velocity, and the $L^p$ norm of vorticity. We then consider initial data with unbounded relative vorticity whose growth near the axis is controlled by $Φ(\log \tfrac{1}{r})$ for a subexponential profile $Φ$, so that $ω_0/r$ belongs to $L^p$ for every $p<\infty$ but not to $L^{\infty}$. For such data, we derive profile dependent upper bounds for the vorticity maximum. In particular, for any polynomial function $Φ(s)=s^k$ with $k\ge 0$, we show that $\|ω(\cdot,t)\|_{L^{\infty}}$ is bounded by $(1+t)^{\frac{4}{3}+k} (\log (2+t) )^{\frac{2k}{3}}$. Moreover, for initial data satisfying $ω_0/r \in L^1\cap L^p$ with a fixed $p\in (3,\infty)$, under additional symmetry and vertical confinement assumptions, we obtain a subexponential-in-time upper bound for the vorticity maximum, thereby improving the classical exponential bound for such data.

Weak solutions for weak turbulence models in electrostatic plasmas

The weak turbulence model, also known as the quasilinear theory in plasma physics, has been a cornerstone in modeling resonant particle-wave interactions in plasmas. Stemming from the Vlasov-Poisson/Maxwell system under the weak turbulence assumption, incorporating the random phase approximation and ergodicity, it takes the form of a integro-differential system, which describes the time dynamics of particle distribution and wave spectrum. The interaction between particles and waves can be treated as a stochastic process, whose transition probability bridges the momentum space and the spectral space. To our knowledge, there is no preceding rigorous analytical work for the quasilinear theory addressed in this manuscript. In this paper, we establish the existence of global weak solutions to the one-dimensional electrostatic quasilinear model for nonnegative, smooth, rapidly decaying initial particle distributions and nonnegative, smooth wave spectra compactly supported in a positive wave-number band. The construction uses the resonance condition to reduce the coupled system to a scalar degenerate parabolic equation, together with uniform estimates and strong convergence of the gradients of regularized approximations. When the initial wave spectrum is positive throughout a single band, we further characterize the equilibrium selected by this approximation procedure. The equilibrium uniquely minimizes a quadratic functional over a nonnegative cone and admits a geometric construction through the least concave majorant of a primitive determined by the initial data. The limiting particle distribution is non-increasing on the corresponding resonant interval and forms plateaus wherever the equilibrium auxiliary function is positive. A relative-entropy argument establishes long-time convergence to this equilibrium.

Energy minimizers in a periodic phase transition model of light-matter interaction in nematic liquid crystals

In this paper we complete the study of global minimizers of a forced, non autonomous, one dimensional, phase transition model, initiated in [8]. Motivated by the recent findings in [9], revealing new configurations of topological structures in light, we consider a forcing term having two periods. We show that depending on the strength of the forcing, at most two thresholds that determine the structure of the minimizers (kinks) are attained. These kinks are now a combination of three types observed experimentally, and they may have at most three zeros. The existence of these complex types of phase transition follows from a periodic one dimensional model of matter-light interaction in nematic liquid crystal based on a thin sample limit of the Oseen-Frank energy. We show that the qualitative behaviour of global minimizers is consistent with the original model.

Fully localised three-dimensional solitary water waves on Beltrami flows with strong surface tension

Fully localised three-dimensional solitary waves are steady water waves which are evanescent in every horizontal direction. This paper presents an existence theory for such waves under the assumptions that the relative vorticity and velocity fields are parallel (`Beltrami flows'), that the free surface of the water takes the form $\{z=η(x,y)\}$ for some function $η: {\mathbb R}^2\rightarrow{\mathbb R}$, and that the influence of surface tension is sufficiently strong. The governing equations are formulated as a single equation for $η$, which is then reduced to a perturbation of the KP-I equation. This equation has recently been shown to have a family of nondegenerate localised solutions, and an application of a suitable variant of the implicit-function theorem shows that they persist under perturbations.
