Experimental verification of the PRIORA Monte Carlo code for proton radiography

Abstract

PRIORA (Proton Radiography Ion-Optical Ray-tracing Analysis) is a fast Monte Carlo model for high-energy proton radiography. It combines fitted proton-matter interaction tables with energy-dependent transfer maps of arbitrary order and simulates approximately $10^6$ protons/s through a complete ion-optical system on an 8-core laptop. We verify it with GSI data obtained with the Ta_bench target: fifteen precision slits in a 2 mm Ta plate between symmetric PMMA staircases. A single experimental image provides the image scale, spatial resolution as a function of chromatic load, signed focus in both planes, effective angular acceptance and multiple-scattering contrast. With identical processing of experiment and simulation and no physics adjustment, PRIORA reproduces the data obtained with 2 and 4 GeV protons. At 2 GeV, PRIORA also recovers sub-percent quadrupole trims consistent with the control-system records and determines a target-plane spatial resolution of $115\pm6\,μ$m.

Fundamental limit of intensity scaling for harmonic generation on plasma mirrors

Plasma mirrors have the potential to considerably boost the intensity of ultra-intense laser pulses through high-order harmonic generation, offering a promising route to the extreme fields required for probing the strong-field regime of quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED). This prospect relies on the favorable scaling of harmonic generation with increasing laser intensity, a longstanding assumption that has remained untested at extreme intensities. Combining the first measurements of Doppler harmonic generation approaching $10^{22}\,\mathrm{W/cm^2}$ with advanced particle-in-cell modeling, our study reveals fundamental limitations to this scaling. We notably observe a strong reduction of the harmonic yield as the laser intensity is increased, and show using simulations that this originates from the interaction of the sub-picosecond laser pedestal with the plasma mirror. This pedestal drives a rapid evolution of the plasma surface, through radiation-pressure compression and surface modulations, which progressively suppress harmonic generation. By extending our simulations up to intensities of $10^{23}\,\mathrm{W/cm^2}$, we show that this evolution accelerates strongly with increasing intensity, eventually leading to plasma mirror disruption on the timescale of the main laser pulse itself, making pulse duration, in addition to temporal contrast, a second key parameter for efficient harmonic generation. These results reveal the fundamental limits of the intensity scaling of harmonic generation from plasma mirrors and establish the conditions required to preserve efficient harmonic generation at extreme intensities, providing critical guidance for their use as intensity boosters toward the SF-QED regime.

Predictors of filament coil non-planarity in a dataset of QI stellarators

Stellarator magnetic fields are often realized with non-planar modular coils with their out-of-plane bending being one of the main engineering challenges. We ask whether the non planarity of the fialment can be predicted from the equilibrium alone. We look at a dataset of coils for stellarator equilibira and find that the geodesic torsion of the magnetic field line is a strong and robust predictor in a wide range of coil feasibility requirements. We compare the performance of the geodesic torsion against other equilibrium and surface geometry properties and find it to be a superior predictorv hardly replaceable by other quantities we considered in this dataset. The ranking it induces also reproduces the ordering of four published configurations --- precise QA, precise QI at nfp 2 and 3, and W7-X. Our conclusions suggest that geodesic torsion of the magnetic field line may be considered as a cheap and robust candidate for a stage-one non-planarity proxy.

Reduced Molecular Plasma Kinetics with Non-Boltzmann Vibrational Distribution

Vibrational kinetics can strongly affect energy transfer, chemical kinetics, and discharge behavior in molecular plasmas, but resolving all internal states is often impractical for reactor-scale simulation. Compact, physics-based vibrational closures are particularly needed when complete state-to-state (StS) data are limited. Starting from a detailed $\mathrm{H}_2$ StS plasma-kinetics framework coupled to an electron-Boltzmann calculation, this work develops a reduced vibrational-kinetics formulation. The $\mathrm{H}_2$ vibrational ladder is reduced to two non-Boltzmann groups that evolve their population and internal energy. State-resolved reaction rates and associated energy-exchange terms are projected onto the groups for subsequent tabulation in reactor-scale plasma models. StS-informed samples of the reduced-model are propagated for pulsed RF $\mathrm{H}_2$ plasmas across a scan of pulse-averaged absorbed power and compared with the corresponding StS simulations. Predictions from the sampled models reproduce the bulk plasma response, including electron density, atomic-H density, and $\mathrm{H}_3^+$ density. Discrepancies in $\mathrm{H}^-$ production and the upper-energy-group vibrational temperature persist across the sampled reductions. This indicates a limitation of the present VDF reconstruction rather than the nominal parameter choice. Tail-sensitive processes therefore require a more accurate representation of the vibrational distribution.
