A General Treatment of Coupled Cavity Resonators
Abstract
Consider several cavity resonators whose resonant frequencies and electromagnetic fields are known, and suppose that they are coupled through apertures. How can the resonant frequencies and resonant electromagnetic fields of the resulting coupled-cavity resonator be expressed in terms of the original resonant frequencies and electromagnetic fields? This is a problem frequently encountered in radio-frequency systems for accelerators. One example is a multicell cavity used in high-energy electron accelerators. In this note, the resonant frequencies and resonant electromagnetic fields of such coupled cavities are examined as generally as possible, based only on Maxwell's equations and boundary conditions. Specifically, the response function of a cavity as viewed from its coupling ports, namely, its admittance matrix, is derived, and a formulation is developed to express the coupled resonant electromagnetic fields using this matrix. The resulting formulation shows that the coupled resonant modes can be described in terms of overlap integrals between the resonant modes of the cavities and the waveguide modes at the coupling apertures. It also shows that the coupled resonant frequencies are given by the zeros of the determinant of a matrix constructed from the admittance matrices. The results thus obtained are applied to simple systems to confirm the validity of the formulation. Numerical calculations based on this formulation are also carried out for periodic systems in an attempt to derive dispersion relations.
