Covering finite fields by translates of multiplicative subgroups

Abstract

Let $G_d$ be the subgroup of index $d>1$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^\times$, and put $G_d^0=G_d\cup\{0\}$. For a covering $A+G_d^0=\mathbb{F}_q$ with $\#A=s$, we prove $q\le d^{8s/d}$ by shifting the roots of a Bonferroni polynomial. Although a uniform bound in $s$ alone must allow exponential growth, our estimate confines such growth to bounded indices and gives polynomial bounds when $s/d$ is bounded. A cubic specialization gives bounds of degree at most eight for $s\le2d$. For shift sets of logarithmic size, higher moment estimates give a uniform covering-probability formula, including the critical window. Together with the index restriction, this determines the covering indices of almost every shift set of size $\lceil k\log q\rceil$ for each fixed integer $k\ge2$. A subfield construction attains the order of the uniform restriction on the index. We determine its covering number exactly and prove minimality under subgroup inclusion. We also characterize equality in the elementary counting bound by subfield cosets. Fixing a subfield as the shift set in a quadratic extension leads to a sharper projection bound, attained by an infinite family with unique representations outside the shift subfield.

Pseudodifferential arithmetic, Riemann and Lindelöf hypotheses

The Weyl symbolic calculus of operators leads to the construction, if one takes for symbol a certain distribution decomposing over the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, of an operator with the following property: the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the validity of a collection of estimates involving this operator. Pseudodifferential arithmetic, a novel chapter of pseudodifferential operator theory, makes it possible to make the operator under study fully explicit. This leads to a disproof of the conjecture: zeros accumulate on the boundary of the critical strip. A similar method leads to a proof of the Lindel\öf hypothesis.

Extensions of locally analytic generalized Steinberg representations

Let $L$ be a finite extension of $\mathrm{Q}_p$. We study locally $\mathrm{Q}_p$-analytic generalized Steinberg representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(L)$ associated with a general Zelevinsky segment and compute certain $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-groups involving these representations. These extension groups give rise to parabolic Breuil simple $\mathcal{L}$-invariants on the automorphic side of a conjectural $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for potentially semistable $p$-adic Galois representations in the non-trianguline case.

Non-vanishing for cubic Hecke $L$-functions

Let $ω$ be a primitive cubic root of unity. We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(ω)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $χ_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[ω]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was known (even over function fields) prior to the writing of this paper. Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $χ\pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.
