Probing the Energy Evolution and Hadronic Cascade Time Dependence of Forward-Backward Multiplicity Correlations in pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$--$13.6$~TeV with AMPT

Abstract

Forward-backward (FB) multiplicity correlations are studied in proton--proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$, $2.76$, $5.02$, $7$, $13$, and $13.6$~TeV using the AMPT model in its default (DF) and string melting (SM) configurations. The coefficient $b_{\rm corr}$ is obtained for windows separated in pseudorapidity and azimuth, and its variation with the pseudorapidity gap, window width, collision energy, transverse momentum interval, and hadronic cascade time $τ_{\rm HC}$ is investigated. The simulated results are compared with the available ALICE measurements, and the model is validated against experimental pseudorapidity densities and charged-pion transverse momentum spectra. The correlation strength is found to decrease gradually with increasing pseudorapidity gap while retaining a substantial pedestal, to rise non-linearly with the window width, and to increase substantially with collision energy. The DF configuration yields systematically larger values of $b_{\rm corr}$ than the SM configuration, while the SM configuration provides the better description of the ALICE data at $0.9$ and $2.76$~TeV and the DF configuration at $7$~TeV. In the lowest transverse momentum intervals the deviations from the data are largest for both configurations. The hadronic cascade time is varied within the SM configuration over $τ_{\rm HC} = 0.6$, $5$, $15$, and $30$~fm/$c$. A monotonic reduction of $b_{\rm corr}$ with increasing $τ_{\rm HC}$ is observed at all energies and for all window widths, with the ordering of the curves preserved throughout. The effect is modest but statistically significant. These results indicate that the FB correlation strength is primarily imprinted at the partonic stage and only mildly diluted by the subsequent hadronic evolution.

Multifield quintessential inflation and Swampland constraints in the IDM

We investigate quintessential inflation in the Inert Doublet Model coupled to a light quintessence field through an exponential interaction. In the Einstein frame, the model forms a noncanonical two-field system with a curved field-space geometry and a Starobinsky-like inflationary plateau. We solve the covariant background and perturbation equations and perform a parameter scan of the exponential slope and the number of inflationary e-folds. The scalar amplitude fixes the inflationary normalization independently at each scan point, rather than selecting a particular value of the quintessence coupling. We find that cumulative entropy-to-curvature transfer significantly modifies the scalar spectrum, while the tensor-to-scalar ratio remains compatible with current CMB limits. The scalar spectral index provides the strongest sensitivity to the exponential coupling. Covariant Swampland diagnostics nevertheless reveal a persistent tension with a strong order-unity de Sitter bound.

Coherent and Dissociative Photon-Induced Production in Herwig 7

We present a particle-level study of photon-induced production in Herwig 7, focusing on coherent, single-dissociative and double-dissociative proton configurations. The simulation combines the Budnev elastic photon flux with an inelastic photon PDF and uses internal Herwig 7 matrix elements for $γγ\to \ell^+\ell^-$ and $γγ\to W^+W^-\to \ell^+\ell^-ν\barν$ as the central setup. Using a dedicated Rivet analysis, we compare hard-system kinematics, charged-particle activity, rapidity-gap observables and forward-remnant-sensitive distributions. We find that shower-setting changes generally have modest effects on hard-system distributions in well-populated regions, while coherent and dissociative samples differ most clearly in additional charged activity and rapidity-gap observables. These results provide a useful baseline for modelling semi-exclusive photon-induced measurements at the LHC and identify the observables most sensitive to dissociative activity in future generator comparisons.

Thermodynamics of two-flavor isospin-asymmetric superfluid quark matter at next-to-leading order

We study quark matter at high isospin asymmetry in the limit of vanishing baryon density, a state of matter governed by the condensation of charged pions. In the weak-coupling limit, this state of matter can be reliably described by conventional perturbative methods where a trivial ground state is assumed. However, since the condensate of charged pions generates a gap in the excitation spectrum of the quarks with a non-perturbative dependence on the strong coupling, corrections to the results from conventional perturbative methods arise. This situation is very reminiscent of the one encountered in isospin-symmetric quark matter at high baryon densities which is expected to be a color superconductor. In the present work, we calculate the thermodynamic properties of superfluid quark matter at high isospin asymmetry, zero temperature, and zero baryon density at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the coupling in the presence of a finite gap. We work in the limit of two massless quark flavors and further assume that the gap is small compared to the isospin chemical potential. Similar to the situation in color-superconducting quark matter at high baryon densities, we find that the gap-induced corrections lead to an increase of the pressure and the speed of sound above their values obtained for non-superfluid quark matter. Notably, starting from asymptotically high isospin asymmetries, these corrections lead to a systematic change of the slope of the speed of sound when the isospin asymmetry is decreased. We compare our results with recent lattice QCD and Dyson-Schwinger equation studies and find good agreement in the regimes where these methods are applicable.
