The locally quaternion group is a countable $B$-group

Abstract

A group $G$ is a $B$-group if every primitive permutation group containing a regular subgroup isomorphic to $G$ is doubly transitive. We prove that the locally quaternion group $\mathrm{Dic}(C_{2^\infty},c)$, the extension of the Prüfer $2$-group by an element squaring to its involution and inverting it, is a $B$-group. This gives an example of a countably infinite $B$-group. This answers Problem 13.30 of the Kourovka Notebook. The proof analyses the automorphism group of an orbital Cayley graph through the central involution. In the main case two half-flip automorphisms generate, with their conjugates, an elementary abelian normal subgroup whose orbits form a nontrivial block system; in the remaining case, where the pointwise stabilizers of the two cosets of the Prüfer group have order two, the conjugates of the central translation generate an elementary abelian normal subgroup, which would be regular if the automorphism group were primitive; an affine lemma for the Prüfer group excludes this. The proof does not depend on computer verification: its two finite case analyses are written out in full, and programs that re-check them are provided as ancillary files.

On the quasi-isometric classification of permutational wreath products

In this article, we initiate the study of the large-scale geometry of permutational wreath products of the form $F\wr_{H/N}H$, where $H$ is finitely presented and where $N$ is a normal subgroup of $H$ satisfying a certain assumption of non coarse separation. The main result is a complete classification of such permutational wreath products up to quasi-isometry, building up on previous works from Genevois and Tessera. For instance, we show that, for $d\ge k\ge 2$, $\mathbb{Z}_{n}\wr_{\mathbb{Z}^{k}} \mathbb{Z}^d$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{m}\wr_{\mathbb{Z}^{k}}\mathbb{Z}^d$ are quasi-isometric if and only if $n$ and $m$ are powers of a common number. We also discuss biLipschitz equivalences between permutational wreath products, their scaling groups, as well as the quasi-isometric classification of other halo products built out of such permutational lamplighters.

A zero-one law for the spectral gap property of pairs in SU(2)

For $n \ge 2$, Gamburd, Jakobson, and Sarnak [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 1, 51-85 (1999)] conjectured that almost every $n$-tuple in $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ has a spectral gap. Toward this conjecture, Fisher [Int. Math. Res. Not. (2006)] established a zero-one law for $n \ge 3$, but obtained only a partial result for $n=2$. In this paper, we prove that the zero-one law also holds for $n=2$. We also remark that a Baire categorical analogue of this result holds.

On the class-breadth conjecture for $p$-groups

The class-breadth conjecture of Leedham-Green, Neumann and Wiegold states that the nilpotency class of any $p$-group is at most $b(G) + 1$, where $\displaystyle{b(G) = \max_{g\in G}\log_p[G:Z_G(g)]}$ denotes the breadth of a group $G$. While several counter-examples to this conjecture have been found for $p = 2$, it is still open in general for $p > 2$. This article is dedicated to the general case $p > 2$ of the conjecture.
