Asymptotics for the number of saddle connections on a slit torus

Abstract

We consider a flat torus with a marked line segment $β$ and prove linear asymptotics for closed curves on the torus disjoint from the interior of the line segment. We also consider segments that begin and terminate at the end points of $β$ whose interiors are disjoint from $β$ and prove $L\log L$ asymptotics. In all cases, after quotienting by the growth rate, we compute the constant explicitly, which differs depending on whether or not $β$ lies in a periodic direction on the torus. In particular, when $β$ lies along a non-periodic trajectory, we show the constant is $2/(|β| ζ(2))$. Moreover, we prove that as a function of the holonomy vector of $β$, the constants are continuous at the points where $β$ lies in a non-periodic direction.

An Algebraic Approach to Periodicity and Complexity of Delone Sets

We study the connection between local complexity and periodicity of Delone sets using an algebraic approach based on annihilators, that is, finite linear relations between translations of a configuration. We model colored Delone sets (Delone multisets) as $\mathbb{R}^d$-configurations, that is, functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with finite range, and extend the notions of annihilators and periodizers from $\mathbb{Z}^d$-configurations to the geometric setting of Delone sets. Our main results describe the structure imposed by the existence of non-trivial annihilators. We show that any $\mathbb{R}^d$-configuration admitting non-trivial annihilators has an annihilator of a particularly simple form, namely a product of finitely many difference operators corresponding to translations in pairwise rationally independent directions. We further improve this result and prove that for configurations supported on Delone sets of finite local complexity (FLC), the corresponding directions can be chosen pairwise linearly independent over $\mathbb{R}$. As a consequence of the existence of the special annihilator, we show that $\mathbb{R}^d$-configurations with annihilators admit a decomposition into finitely many components that are periodic in pairwise rationally independent directions. Moreover, we connect local complexity with algebraic structure by proving that Meyer sets with sufficiently slow patch complexity growth have low pattern complexity and hence admit non-trivial annihilators. Finally, we establish a sufficient and necessary condition under which the existence of suitable annihilators forces periodicity of $\mathbb{R}^d$-configurations supported on FLC Delone sets.

Extreme value theorem for geodesic flow on the quotient of the theta group

We establish an extreme value theorem for the geodesic flow $g_t$ on the hyperbolic surface $Θ\backslash\mathbb{H}^2$ associated with the theta group $Θ$. To capture excursions into both cusps of this surface, we introduce a generalized continued fraction algorithm obtained by splicing the even and odd--odd continued fraction maps into a single dynamical system. We prove that the natural extension of this map is isomorphic to the first return map of the geodesic flow on a suitable cross-section. Using spectral properties of the associated transfer operator, we derive a Galambos-type extreme value law for the digits of the spliced continued fraction. This symbolic result is then translated into a geometric extreme value theorem describing maximal cusp excursions of geodesics on $Θ\backslash\mathbb{H}^2$.

Asymmetry of a class of Mellin transforms

We consider a class of Mellin transforms $μ_η$ associated with a class of functions $η$, defined for every complex $s$ in the critical strip. We establish sufficient conditions on $η$ under which $μ_η(s)$ and $μ_η(1-s)$ cannot both vanish outside the critical line for sufficiently large imaginary parts of $s$. An application is given to the case in which $η$ is the fractional part function, for which the zeros of $μ_η$ coincide with the zeros of the Riemann zeta function.
