Diamond Maximal Operators: Classification, Moduli, and Oscillation Envelopes

Abstract

We study maximal averages generated by bounded cancellative kernels taking values in finite-dimensional real normed spaces, on Euclidean balls and on balls in a non-Archimedean local field with a fixed uniformizer. For angular kernels, pointwise domination of the full maximal operators is equivalent to factorization of their angular averaging maps, with the same optimal constant. Nonzero scalar angular comparison classes are therefore projective kernel classes. For angular kernels constant on a fixed finite measurable partition of the direction space, symmetric convex bodies classify exact norm measurements, Grassmannians parametrize nonzero classes under mutual domination, and positive semidefinite Gram matrices classify Hilbert-valued measurements. For general kernels, the closed convex hull of the averaging densities obtained from all scales and the dual unit ball is a complete invariant of the full maximal operator. A dilation example exhibits identifications of residue kernels beyond scaling and unit-coordinate changes. For nonzero radial residue kernels on bounded inputs, mutual domination is classified by the unit-circle zeros of filter polynomials, counted with multiplicity, with optimal constants given by the $\ell^1$ norms of convolution quotients. We identify the envelope over all normalized bounded cancellative kernels with the best local $L^1$ approximation by constants and prove quantitative convergence of residue envelopes as the resolution increases. Finally, the weights of the finite Fourier transform classify the one-level energy and the associated Carleson functional. This functional is equivalent to the $BMO_2$ seminorm precisely when every nontrivial additive character of the residue field is detected, and the weights determine the optimal comparison constants.

Pseudodifferential arithmetic, Riemann and Lindelöf hypotheses

The Weyl symbolic calculus of operators leads to the construction, if one takes for symbol a certain distribution decomposing over the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, of an operator with the following property: the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the validity of a collection of estimates involving this operator. Pseudodifferential arithmetic, a novel chapter of pseudodifferential operator theory, makes it possible to make the operator under study fully explicit. This leads to a disproof of the conjecture: zeros accumulate on the boundary of the critical strip. A similar method leads to a proof of the Lindel\öf hypothesis.

Extensions of locally analytic generalized Steinberg representations

Let $L$ be a finite extension of $\mathrm{Q}_p$. We study locally $\mathrm{Q}_p$-analytic generalized Steinberg representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(L)$ associated with a general Zelevinsky segment and compute certain $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-groups involving these representations. These extension groups give rise to parabolic Breuil simple $\mathcal{L}$-invariants on the automorphic side of a conjectural $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for potentially semistable $p$-adic Galois representations in the non-trianguline case.

Non-vanishing for cubic Hecke $L$-functions

Let $ω$ be a primitive cubic root of unity. We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(ω)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $χ_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[ω]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was known (even over function fields) prior to the writing of this paper. Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $χ\pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.
