SN 2025wiu: A Type Ib Supernova with Post-Peak Optical Rebrightening

Abstract

We present optical photometric and optical/near-infrared spectroscopic observations of SN 2025wiu, a Type Ib supernova (SN) at z = 0.046927. The r-band light curve exhibits an initial maximum of approximately -18.2 mag, followed by a weaker optical rebrightening reaching approximately -17.8 mag at +38 days in the rest frame relative to the first maximum. However, the reconstructed bolometric light curve does not show a distinct second peak, but instead exhibits a reduced decline rate during the corresponding phase. The spectra consistently show Type Ib features without narrow emission components associated with circumstellar material. The late-time bolometric decline rate of 0.054 +/- 0.008 mag/day is faster than expected for complete trapping of 56Co decay. A radioactive-decay model for the first peak requires nickel mass = 0.47 solar masses, above the range typical of SNe Ib. A combined radioactive-decay and circumstellar-interaction model reproduces the full bolometric light curve with nickel mass ~ 0.38 solar masses, ejecta mass ~ 4.7 solar masses, and an effective circumstellar mass of ~ 0.10 solar masses, with the interaction contributing from the first peak onward. The lack of interaction signatures in the spectra favours an aspherical, disk-like circumstellar structure engulfed by the ejecta, in which the interaction energy is thermalized below the ejecta photosphere; the fitted circumstellar parameters are therefore effective values rather than direct measurements of the circumstellar geometry. SN 2025wiu demonstrates that optical rebrightening does not necessarily imply a genuine bolometric secondary maximum and highlights the importance of multi-band observations for identifying the powering mechanisms of double-peaked stripped-envelope supernovae.

Effects of Viscosity on Sloshing Cold Fronts in Galaxy Clusters

The viscous properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) remain poorly constrained. Cold fronts-sharp discontinuities formed during cluster mergers-offer a potential avenue to probe the effective viscosity of the ICM. Velocity shear across these fronts should generate Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHI), unless viscosity or magnetic tension suppresses them. We perform cluster merger simulations incorporating four ICM viscosity models: (A) inviscid, (B) isotropic Spitzer viscosity, (C) anisotropic Braginskii viscosity, and (D) Braginskii viscosity limited by microinstabilities. The isotropic Spitzer viscosity (case B) strongly suppresses KHI, producing smooth cold front surfaces, while the inviscid (A) and microinstability-limited (D) cases show prominent ripples. The Braginskii case (C) yields intermediate suppression. We also vary the plasma $β$ parameter ($β\approx$ 100 and 1600) to examine how a changing magnetic field strength affects the results. Stronger magnetic fields further suppress KHI, leading to smoother fronts and reduced differences between different viscosity models, while also widening the range of permitted pressure anisotropies when microinstability-based limiters are present. These results indicate that both viscosity and magnetic fields play crucial roles in stabilising sloshing cold fronts in galaxy clusters.

Dark Matter Particle Explorer: Ten-Year On-Orbit Performance and Scientific Outcomes

The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE, also known as ``Wukong'') is the first scientific space mission within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The main scientific objectives of DAMPE include indirect detection of dark matter, cosmic-ray physics, and high energy gamma-ray astronomy. Thanks to its large geometrical factor and thick imaging calorimeter, DAMPE could effectively detect cosmic-ray electrons (including positrons) and gamma-rays up to 10~TeV, and nuclei up to PeV. Since launched on 17 December 2015 into a Sun-synchronous orbit, DAMPE has been smoothly operating on orbit for more than ten years. Here we present an overview of instrument, on-orbit status, and highlight scientific results of DAMPE, including the measurements of the all-electron energy spectrum and the spectra of protons and other nuclei, and high energy gamma-ray line search.

Models of spectral bumps of primary cosmic rays and multi-messenger tests

The energy spectra of individual species of cosmic ray nuclei by recent direct detection experiments show complicated structures with spectral hardenings and softenings rather than featureless power laws, which challenge the traditional understanding of the production, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. Particularly, the DAMPE measurements reveal charge-dependent softenings and reject mass-dependent softenings with a high significance. Taking into account the correlated structures at similar energies in the large-scale anisotropies of cosmic rays, one of the most natural interpretations of the spectral structures is the presence of a nearby cosmic ray source. In this case, the softening energies correspond to the acceleration upper limits of such a source, forming the so-called Peters cycle of the spectra. Alternative models such as the injection/acceleration and propagation models may also reproduce the spectral bumps, but show difficulty to explain the anisotropies. Fluxes of secondary nuclei and $γ$ rays offer additional tests of different models. Future multi-messenger observations are expected to be able to pin down the origin of cosmic rays.
