Joint Subcarrier and Power Allocation for Localization-Oriented Multi-Carrier Underwater ISAC Systems

Abstract

Multi-carrier underwater integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) realizes concurrent acoustic communication and localization, yet the frequency selectivity of the acoustic channel creates uneven positioning capabilities across subcarriers. This paper proposes a localization-oriented subcarrier and power allocation scheme for multi-anchor underwater ISAC systems. We build a unified orthogonal subcarrier multiplexing framework and derive closed-form Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) under frequency-selective channels with colored noise. We derive a subcarrier-level localization information contribution from the time of arrival Fisher information, which enables localization-oriented resource allocation. We derive several theoretical properties regarding the distance and frequency dependence of the localization information metric, and establish a distance-frequency matching principle. These results provide a theoretical foundation for localization-oriented resource allocation and guide the design of a low-complexity greedy algorithm that improves positioning accuracy. Specifically, the algorithm iteratively allocates subcarriers to minimize the residual positioning-error objective, thereby improving positioning accuracy while satisfying communication quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. Simulations verify that our method yields much lower positioning error bound than uniform, random and high-frequency-first subcarrier allocation in symmetric or asymmetric topologies while guaranteeing communication QoS, achieving superior communication-localization tradeoffs.

Beyond the Flat-Spike: Adaptive Sparse CCA for Decaying and Unbalanced Signals

Sparse Canonical Correlation Analysis (SCCA) is a fundamental statistical tool for identifying linear relationships in high-dimensional, multi-view data. While minimax theory establishes an optimal sample complexity scaling additively with the sparsity levels of the canonical vectors, computationally efficient algorithms typically suffer from a suboptimal multiplicative dependence. This computational-statistical gap is intrinsically tied to worst-case ``flat'' signal assumptions. In practice, however, multi-view signals frequently exhibit structured energy concentration, such as a power-law decay. To exploit this structural concentration and bypass the worst-case bottleneck, we propose Bilateral Spectral Energy Pursuit (Bi-SEP). Operating directly on the cross-covariance matrix, Bi-SEP is a stagewise adaptive algorithm that utilizes a proxy refinement step to dynamically track and capture cross-view signal energy. Theoretically, we establish a profile-adaptive sample complexity bound governed by the coupled energy profiles of the two views. Notably, under power-law decay models, we reveal a synergistic phase transition: the optimal linear sample complexity is attainable provided that the aggregate decay rate of the two views is sufficiently large. This result demonstrates that a highly concentrated signal in one view allows the model to accommodate a completely flat signal in its partner. Numerical experiments validate our theoretical findings, illustrating the advantages of Bi-SEP in structured, non-flat signal regimes.

On the Detection Optimality and Exact BER Analysis of NOMA

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) detection using successive interference cancellation (SIC) and joint multiuser maximum likelihood (JML) has been extensively studied, although their presumed optimality for individual-user bit error rate (BER) minimization is unestablished. Moreover, existing BER analyses overlook the SIC-induced statistical changes. This letter derives optimal per-user maximum a posteriori (MAP) detectors, identifies when the near-user detector reduces to conventional SIC, and proves the equivalence of conventional SIC and JML. An exact average BER analysis accounting for SIC-induced statistical changes is presented. The results show that the proposed detector achieves modest but consistent BER gains at low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Holographic Beamforming for Range-Doppler Sidelobe Suppression in OFDM-ISAC

This paper investigates range--Doppler (RD) sidelobe suppression in an integrated sensing and communications system with a reconfigurable holographic surface (RHS). We jointly design the digital feed precoders and RHS amplitudes to minimize the expected integrated RD sidelobe level over random communication symbols, subject to target-illumination and communication constraints. We then develop an alternating successive convex approximation method that updates the feed and RHS variables through convex quadratic subproblems. Numerical results show that the proposed design consistently reduces normalized RD sidelobe levels across different apertures and configurations, and improves sensing weak-target detectability.
