Foundation-Model Supervision of Distilled Potentials for Million-Atom Molecular Dynamics

Abstract

Machine-learned interatomic potentials distilled from foundation models enable fast large-scale molecular dynamics (MD), but they can fail locally in chemical environments that their training data did not sample. System-averaged error metrics and small random audits often miss such sparse or isolated failures. Here we use an exact equivariant foundation model, MACE-MPA-0, to check every atom of million-atom production simulations. Reorganizing two-layer MACE inference into a receiver-chunked three-pass schedule that keeps no per-edge intermediates resident reduces the marginal memory per atom 340-fold, evaluates up to $2.86\times10^{7}$ atoms on a single H200 GPU, and supervises $10^{6}$-atom trajectories in LAMMPS at 1.3% of the run time. Distilled MACE students run four to nine times slower than NEP89 with 0.95-1.28 times the teacher's force error against density functional theory (DFT). In molten SiO$_2$, whole-system checks uncover a persistent tail of under-coordinated atoms hidden by the system-averaged error and an isolated, unphysical O-O contact that a 1% random audit misses 94% of the time. On-the-fly retraining on teacher-labelled 13-Å clusters, with the force loss restricted to their inner 6 Å, removes three quarters of the failure tail and the kilobar-level pressure biases in SiO$_2$ and compressed water; the repair converges to the teacher, not to DFT.

Revisiting the $r_s$ expansion of the uniform electron gas in $d$ dimensions: $\log r_s$ terms from coincident Mellin poles

The high-density expansion of the correlation energy of the uniform electron gas contains $\log r_s$ terms, where $r_s$ is the Wigner--Seitz radius. Their form depends on the dimension $d$. Adapting the Mellin-transform analysis of Feynman integrals in relativistic field theory, we write the energy of the ring series and of diagrams linear in one screened interaction line in $d$ dimensions as Mellin convolutions of a radial kernel, fixed by the diagram, with a scaling function. The scaling function depends on the momentum transfer only through its ratio to a density scale. In the Mellin variable $s$, screening places poles at $s=N(d-1)$ with $N=1,2,\dots$, and the diagram places a pole at $s=d+1$ for the rings and at $s=2$ for a polarization insertion. Once the factors $\log(1/q)$, with $q$ the momentum transfer, cancel between the vertex and self-energy corrections, as the Ward identity requires, a $\log r_s$ term appears where two poles coincide. This rule reproduces the known $\log r_s$ terms in two and three dimensions. In two dimensions it gives the coefficient of the next $\log r_s$ term, $r_s^2\log r_s$, in closed form, $7/π+4\log2/π-160/(9π^2)-16G/π^2=-0.17546$~Ry with $G$ Catalan's constant. In three dimensions the screened second-order exchange diagram alone has an $r_s\log^2r_s$ term at high density and an $r_s^{-1/4}$ term at low density, and the Fock self-energy corrections cancel both.

Outram Park Part II: Agentic Verification, Validation and Documentation as a Human Review Gate for Nuclear Data and Neutronics Software

NJOY21 is part of a modernisation effort for NJOY2016, but mostly consists of C++ wrappers. Agentic coding represents a unique opporunity for NJOY modernisation in Rust, but agents require human expert supervision, which may be in short supply. Moreover, expert human review is the bottleneck in agentic software development as human resources are limited in this context. This work describes a methodology for how a human manager of AI agents can reasonably translate and refactor scientific software with limited domain expertise using principles borrowed from nuclear quality assurance documents. Moreover, it presents a methodology for when to allocate limited human resources for reviewing the agentically generated code. This methodology centres on agentic V&V and documentation, and it is demonstrated via construction of Monte Carlo web demos for the Rust fork of NJOY an Outram Monte Carlo (OutramMC), Rust ports of NJOY2016 and OpenMC, in Outram Park. In this work, an integrated pipeline for the Rust port of NJOY and OutramMC was demonstrated in web demos, and code to code verification and validation was performed with ICSBEP benchmarks for Godiva, HST009 and LCT008. ACE files produced with Outram Park's NJOY port were identical for more than 30 ACE files. These web demos also served as part of agentic documentation, which prepared the codebase for human review.

Decoherence of the pair entangled states at thermalization and interparticle interaction. Heisenberg--Wigner path integral Monte Carlo simulations

For deeper understanding of quantum non-local correlations a new path integral real-time quantum dynamics approach has been developed and applied to the Monte Carlo simulation of the decoherence of pair entangled states in many-body systems in the framework of the ``replica trick''. Calculations have been carried out for the Heisenberg-Wigner path integral representation of the entangled state correlation function (ESCF) in the modified unified electron gas model as example. The Wiener-Khinchin transformation of ESCF has been applied to random paths in path integral allowing for the Monte Carlo simulation of ESCF. Presented results include the spin-resolved radial distribution functions, ESCFs and estimations of the decoherence time of the entangled electron pairs due to thermalization and interparticle interaction.
