$a$-numbers of covers in characteristic two: semigroups and Riemann-Roch spaces

Abstract

We compute the $a$-numbers of the Garcia-Güneri-Stichtenoth curves, the Beelen-Montanucci curves, and the Skabelund covers of Suzuki curves in characteristic two. The proofs use the identity $a(X)=\ell(\tfrac12\operatorname{div}(dt))$ and reduce the calculations to Riemann-Roch spaces on the base curves. We obtain transfer formulas for odd-degree radical covers, with one or several points at infinity, and evaluate them using Weierstrass semigroups and plane sections of the Hermitian curve. For the first two families we also give cyclic models over the projective line and relate the formulas to Elkin's rank formula. We then treat two classes of Artin-Schreier fibre products. A supersingular genus-six family has a-number $3$ at the zero parameter and $2$ elsewhere, although the genera and $a$-numbers of its quadratic quotients remain fixed. We determine its Ekedahl--Oort types as $(0,0,0,1,2,3)$ and $(0,1,1,2,3,4)$,

Ceresa Cycles of $X_{0}(N)$

The Ceresa cycle is an algebraic 1-cycle on the Jacobian of an algebraic curve. Although it is homologically trivial, Ceresa famously proved that for a very general complex curve of genus at least 3, it is non-trivial in the Chow group. In this paper we study the Ceresa cycle attached to the complete modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ modulo rational equivalence. For prime level $p$ we give a complete description, namely we prove that if $X_{0}(p)$ is not hyperelliptic, then its Ceresa cycle is non-torsion. For general level $N$, we prove that there are finitely many $X_{0}(N)$ with torsion Ceresa cycle. Our method relies on the relationship between the vanishing of the Ceresa cycle and Chow-Heegner points on the Jacobian. We use the geometry and arithmetic of modular Jacobians to prove that such points are of infinite order and therefore deduce non-vanishing of the Ceresa cycle.

Uniform vector bundles over $\mathbb{P}^4$

There is a long-standing conjecture which states that every uniform algebraic vector bundle of rank $r<2n$ on the $n$-dimensional projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ is homogeneous. This conjecture is valid for $n\leq3$. In this paper, we classify all uniform vector bundles of rank $r<8$ over $\mathbb{P}^4$ and show that the conjecture holds for $n=4$.

Splitting vector bundles over real algebraic varieties

Suppose $X$ is a smooth affine real variety and $\mathscr{E}$ is a vector bundle over $X$. We analyze the problem of splitting off a free rank one summand from $\mathscr{E}$ in corank $0$ and $1$. The problem in corank $0$ can be viewed as the search for a real analog of Murthy's celebrating splitting theorem in the algebraically closed case: to wit, beyond the vanishing of the top Chern class in Chow theory, are the obstructions to splitting ``purely topological''? In a sense, the answer in this case is yes, and we give a proof, using motivic techniques, of a mild extension of the results of Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Bhatwadekar-Das-Mandal. In corank $1$, in the algebraically closed situation, Murthy's splitting conjecture (now a theorem in characteristic $0$) predicts that the vanishing of the top Chern class in Chow theory is the only obstruction to splitting off a free rank $1$ summand, and we can search for a suitable ``real'' analog of this assertion. We observe that several natural guesses for a ``real'' analog of Murthy's splitting conjecture cannot be true, i.e., that the situation over the real numbers is rather complicated.
