On strongly coherent confidence envelopes for the false discoveries

Abstract

Coherence is a long term notion in the literature of multiple testing. From FWER control multiple testing theory to confidence envelopes on the number of false positives, coherence is a desirable property for multiple testing procedures. However, we show in this article that coherence is not a sufficient property to ensure that a multiple testing procedure is nonimprovable via an interpolation mechanism. We introduce a new no- tion, the notion of strong coherence, which is a stronger property than coherence and ensures that a multiple testing procedure is nonimprovable via the interpolation mech- anisms considered in the literature. Finally, we provide a uniform improvement of the confidence envelope from Durand et al. (2020) that is computable in polynomial time and demonstrate the improvement on simulated data.

A Data-Consistent Approach to Ensemble Filtering

Ensemble data assimilation is challenging when the ensemble size is substantially smaller than the state and observation dimensions, leaving empirical covariance information rank deficient and sensitive to finite sampling. We introduce the Quantity-of-Interest Principal Component Analysis Ensemble Data-Consistent Filter (QPCA-EnDCF), a deterministic filtering method motivated by data-consistent inversion that regularizes the update in the whitened forecast--observation mismatch space. The method restricts the correction to a rank-$κ$ empirical spectral subspace before mapping it to state space through an empirical EnDCF gain. We establish concentration and spectral-projector perturbation results and derive a bias--variance decomposition showing that truncation bias is governed by the discarded component of the population mean residual, while finite-ensemble variability depends on estimation of the retained correction. QPCA-EnDCF avoids the analysis-mean variance contribution from perturbed observations in stochastic EnKF updates, and Lorenz--96 experiments show improved calibration and lower mean-squared error relative to the tested stochastic and deterministic controls, primarily through lower across-realization variance despite increased bias. An idealized inlet shallow-water experiment further shows that QPCA-EnDCF can be implemented in a high-dimensional, severely rank-deficient nonlinear model and remains numerically viable through the prescribed shelf-crossing endpoints.

Manifold Hypothesis: Conditional Certificates and Consistent Intrinsic Dimension Estimation

We study what noisy data can justify before a manifold and its intrinsic dimension are assumed. For repeated observations with independent isotropic Gaussian errors of unknown variance, we compose a support confidence event with a sound geometric verifier to certify a nearby smooth witness of arbitrary compact latent support. Whole-support inference requires an external lower mass condition; independent validation instead certifies proximity of probability mass. Separate all-scale hypotheses yield true-support structure and dimension recovery: a credited Reifenberg--Dini criterion and positive continuous density give local $C^1$ structure and consistent dimension estimation, while two-sided Ahlfors regularity and positive reach give quantitative covariance separation under the stated sampling and observation-transfer conditions. An exact-arithmetic implementation verifies restricted witness families. A further matrix check certifies linear coordinates on a geometrically verified affine span containing the witness and propagates approximation and decoding errors. This restricted construction neither implements the general minimal-dimension Whitney theorem nor infers exact manifold support from finite approximation. Executed torus and Julia-set experiments test the observation-to-witness-to-coordinate route, including singular-support controls. Dynamical systems and chaos are the primary application context; state-identification and finite-horizon prediction results are conditional on observation embeddings and transition validation. Takens reconstruction is an optional scalar-delay application requiring additional smoothness, dynamics and observable conditions. Image comparisons are auxiliary reconstruction diagnostics. The finite-data verifier establishes neither those dynamical conditions nor the all-scale geometric premises for true-dimension recovery.

Watanabe's Learning Coefficients in Item Response Theory

We study the joint-parameter two-parameter logistic (2PL) model in item response theory, in which both item parameters and respondent abilities are treated as unknown fixed parameters. We first characterize its singular structure through the Fisher information matrix. The parameterization has an inherent scale indeterminacy; when all discrimination parameters are nonzero and the ability parameters are not all equal, its tangent direction is the only null direction and the quotient model is locally regular. We then classify the additional rank deficiencies caused by zero discrimination parameters and degenerate ability configurations. This classification separates the strata governed by a nondegenerate quadratic approximation from those requiring an analysis of higher-order product singularities. Under an asymptotic regime in which the numbers of items and respondents are fixed and the number of independent response matrices tends to infinity, we derive explicit local and global learning coefficients and multiplicities for every realizable true response distribution. The global formulas depend only on the true response probabilities, including cases in which some probabilities equal \(1/2\) or are constant across respondents. These results extend previous calculations restricted to nonzero true discrimination parameters and provide the quantities required for applying sBIC to the joint-parameter 2PL model.
