Metric Dimension is NP-complete on Graphs of Treewidth Two

Abstract

The metric dimension of a connected graph is the least number of vertices whose distance vectors distinguish all vertices. We show that deciding whether the metric dimension of a graph is at most a given integer is NP-complete on graphs of treewidth at most two. As the problem is polynomial on trees, the graphs of treewidth one, this settles the treewidth threshold of its hardness, which was known to lie between two and twenty-four. The reduction is from satisfiability of formulas in which every literal occurs at most twice. To such a formula with $n$ clauses and $r$ variables it associates a graph $G_φ$ of treewidth at most two with $O((n+r)^2)$ vertices, whose metric dimension is $2(n+r)+5$ if the formula is satisfiable and $2(n+r)+6$ otherwise.

Optimal Unambiguous DNFs and Alon-Saks-Seymour

We construct unambiguous DNFs having width $O(n)$ but $0$-certificate complexity $Ω(n^2)$. By utilizing the special structure of these DNFs, we prove a lifting theorem with a constant-sized gadget that lifts the DNF to a communication problem, while losslessly translating the separation in certificate complexity to a separation in communication complexity. This leads to an optimal refutation of the Alon-Saks-Seymour conjecture, as well as an optimal communication lower bound for the Clique versus Independent Set problem, improving the previous results of Balodis, Ben-David, Göös, Jain and Kothari (FOCS 2021, SICOMP 2023) by several doubly logarithmic factors. As further applications of our construction to query complexity and learning theory, we exhibit: (a) a family of Boolean functions that has an optimal quartic separation between certificate complexity and approximate degree, and (b) a sample compression lower bound of $Ω(\sqrt{\log c})$ for multiclass concept classes over $c$ labels.

The Six-Dimensional Tarski Problem is $Ω(\log^3 n)$-Hard

We study the deterministic query complexity of finding a fixed point of a monotone function $f:[n]^d\to[n]^d$, where querying $x$ returns $f(x)$. For fixed $d\ge2$, earlier work established a lower bound of $Ω((\log n)^2)$ and an upper bound of $O_d((\log n)^{\lceil(d+2)/3\rceil})$ for the query complexity. Very recently, several papers obtained improved lower bounds using AI-assisted proofs. In this paper, we further improve these lower bounds to $\text{Tarski}(n,d)=Ω_d((\log n)^{2+\lfloor\log_3(d/2)\rfloor})$. In particular, we obtain the optimal $Θ((\log n)^3)$ deterministic query complexity in six dimensions.

An Optimal Gap-Majority Lemma for Bounded Rounds Communication

Recent work of Sawettamalya and Yu (FOCS 2026) initiated the study of \emph{gap-majority} composition in randomized communication. They showed that if computing a $\{\pm 1\}$-valued function $f$ in $r$ rounds requires $I$ bits of information, then distinguishing $\sum_{i=1}^n f(X_i,Y_i)\geq 0.01\sqrt{n}$ from $\sum_{i=1}^n f(X_i,Y_i)\leq -0.01\sqrt{n}$ in $r$ rounds requires $n \cdot (I-O(\log n))$ bits of information. They also conjectured that the $O(\log n)$-additive ``loss'' can be further reduced to $O(1)$. In this note, we record that a minor adaptation to their approach combining with a finer analysis achieves the conjectured $O(1)$ loss, establishing a gap-majority lemma for bounded-round communication that is optimal up to constant factors.
