A Sideways Crack-Path Instability Amplified by Slow Loading
Abstract
Crack-path instabilities in solids are typically associated with high propagation velocities. In contrast, we show that nanoparticle-filled elastomers exhibit a sideways crack-path instability that is amplified as the pulling velocity decreases and nearly vanishes at high pulling velocities. The sideways deviation amplitude decreases logarithmically with increasing pulling velocity and scales as the square root of the filler fraction. Large deviations develop at low mean crack velocities and are associated with effective fracture energies up to two orders of magnitude lower. These findings are consistent with subcritical rupture kinetics and suggest that the deviation amplitude is limited by the elasto-adhesive length.
