Tomography for coherent noise
Abstract
Coherent noise poses a fundamentally greater challenge to quantum error correction than independent s- tochastic Pauli errors, because unitary errors preserve interference between error paths, can accumulate over multiple quantum error correction rounds, and leave the encoded logical channel with a residual coherent com- ponent. If the parameters of such coherent noise can be accurately determined, this knowledge can be exploited to inject correlated priors into the decoding graph, and to perform maximum-likelihood decoding under poly- nomially tractable structures, significantly improving the accuracy of syndrome-based decoding. In this work, we introduce one protocol to determine the model and parameters of coherent noise, and reduce the complexity of the experiment from 16nto O(16), which is of great significance for correcting coherent noise in quantum error correction.
