Analyzing and Mitigating Poisoning Attacks on Flow-Based Intrusion Detection

Abstract

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) are increasingly deployed in operational networks, their dependence on large-scale training data introduces a critical vulnerability to stealthy poisoning attacks. We demonstrate that latent backdoors can be successfully implanted in flow-based IDS models by poisoning as little as 0.001% of the training data, maintaining near-nominal performance on clean inputs while ensuring high attack success rates. To address this threat, we propose a diagnostic-first methodology that localizes trigger-relevant features through constrained perturbation analysis and detects poisoning-induced behavioral drift by comparison with a distilled baseline model. The proposed methodology further enables targeted mitigation via automated data sanitization or neuron pruning. Our findings expose the operational risks of near-undetectable backdoors and provide a scalable approach to analyzing, quantifying, and mitigating backdoor exposure in AI-based IDS.

The Variant of Designated Verifier Signature Scheme with Message Recovery

In this work, we introduce a strong Designated Verifier Signature (DVS) scheme that incorporates a message recovery mechanism inspired by the concept of the Universal Designated Verifier Signature (UDVS) scheme. It is worth noting that Saeednia's strong designated verifier signature scheme fails to guarantee the privacy of the signature, making it unsuitable for certain applications such as medical record certificates or voting systems. To overcome this limitation, we extend Lee's strong designated verifier signature with a message recovery scheme to develop a universal designated verifier signature scheme. This universal designated verifier scheme is crafted to safeguard the privacy of signature holders, ensuring that only designated verifiers can authenticate the true signer and recover the messages.

EthCluster: An Unsupervised Static Analysis Method for Ethereum Smart Contract

Poorly designed smart contracts are particularly vulnerable, as they may allow attackers to exploit weaknesses and steal the virtual currency they manage. In this study, we train a model using unsupervised learning to identify vulnerabilities in the Solidity source code of Ethereum smart contracts. To address the challenges associated with real-world smart contracts, our training data is derived from actual vulnerability samples obtained from datasets such as SmartBugs Curated and the SolidiFI Benchmark. These datasets enable us to develop a robust unsupervised static analysis method for detecting five specific vulnerabilities: Reentrancy, Access Control, Timestamp Dependency, tx.origin, and Unchecked Low-Level Calls. We employ clustering algorithms to identify outliers, which are subsequently classified as vulnerable smart contracts.

Penetration Testing for System Security: Methods and Practical Approaches

Penetration testing refers to the process of simulating hacker attacks to evaluate the security of information systems . This study aims not only to clarify the theoretical foundations of penetration testing but also to explain and demonstrate the complete testing process, including how network system administrators may simulate attacks using various penetration testing methods. Methodologically, the paper outlines the five basic stages of a typical penetration test: intelligence gathering, vulnerability scanning, vulnerability exploitation, privilege escalation, and post-exploitation activities. In each phase, specific tools and techniques are examined in detail, along with practical guidance on their use. To enhance the practical relevance of the study, the paper also presents a real-life case study, illustrating how a complete penetration test is conducted in a real-world environment. Through this case, readers can gain insights into the detailed procedures and applied techniques, thereby deepening their understanding of the practical value of penetration testing. Finally, the paper summarizes the importance and necessity of penetration testing in securing information systems and maintaining network integrity, and it explores future trends and development directions for the field. Overall, the findings of this paper offer valuable references for both researchers and practitioners, contributing meaningfully to the improvement of penetration testing practices and the advancement of cybersecurity as a whole.
