Charge Response Simulation of Liquid Argon Compton Cameras for Precise MeV Gamma-Ray Event Reconstruction
Abstract
We studied the detector response for a liquid-argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) Compton camera targeting MeV gamma-ray astronomy by a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation, implemented within ComptonSoft, incorporates electron-ion recombination, charge diffusion, and induction on the electrode pixels. We evaluated the angular resolution measure (ARM) and the energy reconstruction error as functions of electronic noise, pixel pitch, and the recombination correction method. An electronic noise level of 4 keV and a pixel pitch of 1 mm yield an ARM (FWHM) of about 3 degrees at 1332.5 keV and an energy reconstruction error better than 4\% for incident energies of 1173.2 keV and above. Recombination correction using both scintillation light and charge signals improves the ARM and the energy error by factors of 1.7--2.3 and 2.2--5.4, respectively, compared to the charge-only correction, although the uncertainty of the recombination-fluctuation model remains. Since this simulation relies on idealized assumptions such as the use of the Monte Carlo truth in the event reconstruction, these values represent the best cases achievable under these detector conditions; nevertheless, they show that a large-scale LArTPC is a promising Compton camera for cosmic MeV gamma-ray observations.
