Spin-orbit torque effects in all-electrical spin-wave spectroscopy experiments
Abstract
Electrical excitation and detection of propagating spin waves are key elements of magnonic devices. While conventional antennas consisting of non-magnetic metals such as Au or Cu excite spin waves predominantly through radio-frequency (RF) Oersted fields, antennas comprising Pt can additionally generate spin-orbit torques (SOTs) via the spin Hall effect. Recent theoretical work has proposed RF-SOT as an alternative mechanism for coherent spin-wave excitation, predicting distinct characteristics compared with conventional inductive excitation. Here, we investigate Pt antennas for the excitation of coherent spin waves in 105-nm-thick epitaxial $\text{Y}_3\text{Fe}_5\text{O}_{12}$ (YIG) films through two potential mechanisms: an oscillating Oersted field and an oscillating spin current. The raw experimental transmission spectra are strongly affected by fabrication-induced modifications to the YIG film associated with the etching process together with spatially inhomogeneous interface conditions induced by Pt. After removing these contributions, we find the remaining two wave propagation consistent with a combined excitation from Oersted fields and SOTs.
