Solar-Blind Ultraviolet Communication: Taxonomy and Experimental Characterization
Abstract
Solar-blind ultraviolet communication (UVC) exploits near-zero solar background radiation and strong atmospheric scattering in the 200-280 nm band, enabling photon-level daytime communication and propagation modes beyond conventional line-of-sight (LOS) links. However, existing studies mainly focus on individual channel types, and a unified channel classification is still lacking. This paper presents a taxonomy of all four fundamental solar-blind UVC channels together with representative experimental validations and a comparative performance analysis. The proposed framework provides practical guidelines for selecting appropriate channel architectures for future solar-blind UVC systems.
