Long-time asymptotics for the focusing coupled Kundu-Eckhaus equation

Abstract

The focusing coupled Kundu-Eckhaus (CKE) equation extends the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equation by adding quintic and derivative nonlinearities. We study the Cauchy problem for the focusing CKE equation with Schwartz initial data under the assumption of no discrete spectrum and no spectral singularities on the real axis. Based on the gauge equivalence between the focusing CKE and CNLS equations, we analyze the associated $3\times3$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem by the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. By establishing joint error estimates for the CNLS solution and the gauge phase, we obtain a uniform long-time asymptotic formula for the dispersive radiation of the CKE equation with an $O(t^{-1}\log t)$ remainder in bounded velocity cones.

The Korteweg-de Vries limit for the global dynamics of the Toda lattice

It has been observed that the dynamics of the Toda lattice can be well described by solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the continuum limit. We show that, under the KdV scaling and a suitable translation, the solution of the Toda lattice with H^1 initial data converges to that of the KdV equation globally in time. Our proof relies on tools from harmonic analysis and also on the construction and the conservation of mass and energy of the Toda lattice, the latter of which are derived from the completely integrable structure of the Toda lattice. As a consequence, we obtain long-wave KdV limits for the Toda lattice.

Maxwell's relations as Hamilton's equations: a symplectic and variational framework

We develop a geometric framework in which classical thermodynamics is reformulated as a Hamiltonian dynamical system. An explicit canonical mapping $(q,p,t,H)\leftrightarrow(V,-P,S,-T)$ identifies Maxwell's relations as the characteristic equations of the thermodynamic Poincaré--Cartan one-form, in direct parallel with Hamilton's equations of motion. Treating thermodynamic potentials as action functionals, a variational principle recovers both the Maxwell relations and the thermodynamic constraints (adiabaticity, isothermality) as conserved first integrals. For adiabatic processes in an ideal gas, this yields explicit second-order ordinary differential equations for $V(T)$ and $P(T)$, each governed by a temperature-dependent Lagrangian. Assembling the component Lagrangians into a multi-parameter Lagrangian 1-form $\mathcal{L}$, we prove that the closure condition $d\mathcal{L}=0$ holds on the solution manifold, establishing that path-independence of thermodynamic state functions is a geometric consequence of multi-time integrability rather than an independent postulate.

Existence Conditions for Darboux Curves and Analytic First Integrals of a Liénard-Type Quadratic Vector Field

We study the rational quadratic differential equation \[ \frac{\mathrm{d}y}{\mathrm{d}x} = \frac{ay^2+by+cx}{y^2}, \qquad a,b,c\in\C, \] under the non-degeneracy assumptions \[ c\neq 0,\qquad 2ay+b\not\equiv 0. \] Equivalently, after clearing the denominator, we consider the polynomial vector field \[ \dot{x}=y^2,\qquad \dot{y}=ay^2+by+cx. \] We give a complete, directly checkable classification of its Darboux curves. If $a=0$, no non-constant Darboux polynomial exists. If $a\neq 0$, a non-constant Darboux polynomial exists if and only if \[ c=-ab\qquad\text{or}\qquad c=-2ab. \] In these two cases the unique irreducible Darboux polynomials, up to non-zero constant multiples, are respectively \[ y-ax,\qquad y^2-2bx. \] Consequently every non-constant Darboux polynomial is a non-zero constant multiple of a positive integral power of the corresponding irreducible factor. We then place this classification in the framework of Riccati (R-)integrability and rational potentials. Excluding the exceptional branch $c=-2ab$, the analytic integrability theorem identifies $c=-ab$ as the branch admitting a global Riccati-type analytic first integral. For $c=-2ab$, we compute the first four transverse variational groups along the transformed Darboux divisor over the rational function field. Their dimensions are $1,2,3,4$; the fourth is the full group of invertible fourth-order transverse jets. We prove that this exceptional branch admits no Riccati first integral and hence is not R-integrable. Finally, we relate the branch $c=-ab$ to the Quartic Inverse Riccati (QIR) class and discuss an invariant-based classification problem for quartic Abel equations.
