Optimally Setting RMS Energy Bands for Detecting Oscillations
Abstract
Oscillation monitors have root-mean-square (RMS) energy detectors at their core. These detect oscillation in a predefined frequency band by comparing the signal power in that band with a threshold (usually set empirically). A key design decision is the choice of frequency bands. Traditionally, for monitoring the stability of wide-area electromechanical modes, finer bands were set below 1 Hz, while higher frequencies were covered by wider bands. However, this approach can yield poor detection in modern power systems with fast and largely unknown local dynamics. This letter proposes an algorithm to set frequency bands from the ambient noise spectrum to maximize the average detection performance.
