Relativistic dynamical friction in Kerr-Schild coordinates

Abstract

Simulations of the evolution of matter on static metric backgrounds allow us to estimate backreaction effects like dynamical friction at first order in the matter density. Previous simulations of dynamical friction have used boosted isotropic and quasi-isotropic Kerr coordinates, which simplifies the extraction of the relevant diagnostics but results in a more complicated implementation of the evolution. In particular, the lack of horizon penetrating coordinates means that high resolutions are needed to ensure convergence, and the boosted, spinning black hole metric cannot easily be written in a closed form, making it more costly to evaluate. In this paper we describe how to reformulate the calculation of the diagnostics in the boosted Kerr-Schild frame for the non-spinning case. We verify that our implementation reproduces previous results quantifying dynamical friction in wave-like dark matter in the appropriate regimes. We discuss the subtleties of transforming diagnostic observables between frames in a 3+1 evolution and develop a general framework for this process.

Stability of Vacuum and Quantum Dynamics in Anti-de Sitter Spacetimes

Canonical quantization on scalar and Maxwell fields is studied for the stability of vacuum and construction of quantum dynamics in Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The $ξRϕ^2$ term in the Lagrangian of scalar field with $ξ> 5/48$ (mass term just introduces shift of $ξ$) can cause the spectrum of the self-adjoint Hamiltonian with negative value not bounded from below. The degrees of freedom corresponding to the negative values are constrained system and are ambiguous in space direction and in commutation relation. The only other algebra accommodated in 3-dimensional space consistent with locality, the anti-commutation relation, is definite confronting the constrain, and trivialize the negative spectrum to be inactive and absent degrees of freedom. Thus only the physical bosons corresponding to the non-negative spectrum span the Hilbert space. For the Maxwell fields as another constrained system, the gauge invariant canonical energy momentum tensor straightforwardly leads to the gauge invariant non-negative Hamiltonian. The 2-dimensional independent dynamical degrees of freedom are quantized in temporal gauge. The energy momentum tensors for both quantized fields are renormalized to be finite at operator level, which guarantee the stable vacuum maximally symmetric and the particle Fock states the representation of the AdS symmetry SO(2,3). Adopting Weinberg's framework, the new covariant free quantum scalar field is reconstructed in the corresponding mode function space isomorphic to the free boson Hilbert space, allowing various local effective interaction terms among fields introduced. The Yang-Feldman equations relate the free fields and the interacting fields with the Green functions determined properly in the mode function space.

The point-particle-limit effective-source approach for computing gravitational self-force in the Lorenz gauge

The traditional effective-source method is hampered by complex analytical expressions and the inherent smoothness limit, which incur high computational costs and complicate implementation. To overcome these limitations, we introduce the point-particle-limit effective source method, which analytically takes the size of the effective source to zero, thereby transforming the problem into a well-defined jump condition of retarded metric field at the particle position governed by the local singular field. This formulation naturally pairs with a discontinuous Galerkin scheme, whose inherent capacity for accommodating solution discontinuities enables highly accurate enforcement of the jump conditions. We apply both the traditional and point-particle-limit effective source method to calculate the time-domain gravitational metric perturbation and gravitational self-force in the Lorenz gauge on a point particle in a circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. The comparison of numerical results shows the excellent advantage of the point-particle-limit effective source method, which validates the correctness and efficiency of the point-particle-limit effective source method and thereby establishes a numerical foundation for computing generic geodesic orbits or long-time self-consistent orbital evolution.

Generalized First Law and Smarr-type Relation: Beyond Additivity and Extensivity

In this work, we develop a general framework for deriving the first law of black hole thermodynamics and the associated Smarr-type relation for 4-dimensional static spherically symmetric spacetimes within a broad class of generalized entropy models. In addition, by employing the entropy representation for the Reissner--Nordström (RN) black hole, we determine a concise curvature functional that depends only on this representation and its derivatives. A general flatness condition is derived, demonstrating that when the entropy Hessian metric is regular and nondegenerate, both homogeneous power-law transformations and a separate logarithmic branch leave the RN black hole's Ruppeiner geometry flat. On the other hand, Rényi, Sharma-Mittal, Kaniadakis, and LQG-inspired entropy deformations typically give rise to nonvanishing curvature in the regular thermodynamic regime, demonstrating that the extremality of the RN black hole does not by itself require a curvature divergence.
