Reflexivity of Grothendieck Spaces and Strongly Normal Sequences

Abstract

A normalized sequence $(y_n)$ in the dual $E^{*}$ of a Banach space $E$ is called normal if it is weak-star null, and strongly normal if [ G(y_n)=\left{x\in E:\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}|y_n(x)|<\infty\right} ] is dense in $E$. We prove that, within the class of Grothendieck Banach spaces, reflexivity is characterized by the subsequence behavior of normal sequences: a Grothendieck space $E$ is reflexive if and only if every normal sequence in $E^{*}$ contains a strongly normal subsequence. If $E$ is nonreflexive and Grothendieck, then $E^{*}$ contains a normalized weakly null sequence none of whose subsequences is strongly normal; more strongly, it contains a closed hereditarily $\ell_{1}$ subspace $Y$ with a normalized weakly null Schauder basis such that no sequence in $S(Y)$ is strongly normal. We also obtain an exact quotient criterion valid for arbitrary Banach spaces: a normal sequence has a strongly normal subsequence precisely when, for some subsequence $z=(z_n)$, the quotient $E/\bigcap_n\ker z_n$ is separable. The proofs combine a weak-star basic-sequence argument with results of Haydon, Johnson--Maurey--Schechtman and Popov. Concrete realizations are given in $(L_{\infty}(μ))^{*}$ for nonatomic probability spaces (and, more generally, for $σ$-finite spaces with a nonatomic part) and in $\ell_{\infty}^{*}$.

Geometric conditions which imply $w^*$-normal structure

Let $X$ be a complex Banach space. In their seminal work, Lau and Mah (\cite{LM}) study a geometric property called Lim's condition which, for separable $X$, implies that for any non-empty $w^*$-compact convex set $K \subset X^*$, any nonexpansive mapping $T: K \rightarrow K$ has a fixed point. In this paper, we study a weaker form of Lim's condition, which we call weak-Lim's condition. We prove that if $\ell_1 \not\hookrightarrow X$, then weak-Lim's condition on $X^*$ implies the fixed point property for non-expansive maps on weakly compact subsets of $X$. In the case of a commutative $C^\ast$-algebra, we prove that weak-Lim's condition is equivalent to Lim's condition. We show that Lim's condition characterizes $C^*$-algebras which are a $c_0$-direct sum of finite-dimensional operator spaces, while weak-Lim's condition characterizes $C^*$-algebras which are a $c_0$-direct sum of the spaces of compact operators on Hilbert spaces. For a uniform algebra, we extend a result of Lau and Mah to show that weak-Lim's condition implies that the space is finite-dimensional. In the case of an $L^1$-predual space, we show that this condition implies $k$-smoothness of the norm in the sense considered in \cite{LR}.

Classification of bipartite observables I: stable and uniformly stable observables

This is the first of a series of three papers that bring model theory to quantum information. The dividing lines of Shelah's classification theory, which separate the tame first-order theories from the wild ones, become properties of bipartite observables: properties of the expectation values obtained when two independently prepared quantum systems are idealized one after the other. In this paper we focus on stability. An observable is stable when the order in which the two systems are idealized never changes its expectation value, and this is Shelah's stability. Its classical characterizations, in model theory and in analysis, acquire a physical meaning: idealized preparations are simulated by finite mixtures of actual ones, and adaptive probes can tell apart only polynomially many preparations.

Completely symmetric subspaces of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces

Let $2<p<\infty$. We prove that every infinite-dimensional closed subspace $F$ of a noncommutative $L_p$-space contains a subspace completely isomorphic to $\ell_p$, $C_p$, $R_p$, or $C_p\cap R_p$ and completely complemented in $F$. This answers the question of Junge and Xu on the existence of completely symmetric basic sequences.
