Neutrino oscillations inside ultrarelativistic matter: on the role of the Tolman VI spacetime

Abstract

While both neutrino propagation in photons and ultrarelativistic plasmas and neutrino oscillations in curved spacetimes have been studied extensively, their combination in a self-gravitating geometry appears not to have been considered previously. In this paper, we will investigate neutrino oscillations inside a static spherically symmetric spacetime, derived self-consistently from Einstein's equations, supported by ultrarelativistic matter. By relying on the geodesic motion and geometrical symmetries of the configuration, we will compute analytically the neutrino eikonal and spinoptics phase oscillations. Next, we will relate resonance phenomena to the physical interpretation of the background material inside which neutrinos travel for disentangling gravitational versus electroweak effects. We will inspect the effects of the pure gravitational and pure matter fields, and of the temperature in the neutrino oscillations; we will explain why our results are not coordinate artifacts, and we will certify our heuristic method by comparing with the asymptotic behaviours predicted by thermal field theory approaches. We will raise awareness on the relevance of the spinoptics phase shift entering the flavor conversion probability, should the neutrinos hit a curvature singularity. Theoretically, we will scrutinize the separate roles of geometrical symmetries versus physical features of the configuration, while astrophysically we will qualitatively discuss neutrino oscillations inside stars and in the Cosmic Microwave Background at different temperature and density conditions. Our research puts forward, in the context of the Tolman VI metric, an observational method for identifying naked singularities in our Universe: neutrinos would simultaneously be physically overlapped, in flavor-equilibrium and quantum-mechanically scrambled.

Effect of ultralight dark matter on compact binary mergers

The growing catalogue of gravitational wave events enables a statistical analysis of compact binary mergers, typically quantified by the binary merger rate density. This quantity can be influenced by ambient factors, following which, in this work we have investigated the impact of dark matter environment on the merger statistics. We construct a baseline astrophysical model of eccentric and quasi-circular compact binary mergers and extend it by incorporating a model of ultra light dark matter, which affects the orbital evolution of binaries through accretion and dynamical friction. Our analysis of the merged population of binary progenitors demonstrates that, compared to the baseline model, ULDM can potentially alter the merger statistics around an optimal combination of ambient density $\lesssim10^4 \textrm{GeV}/\textrm{cm}^{3}$ and eccentricity $\sim 0.5$. A comparison with the gravitational wave data from the GWTC-3 catalogue provides crucial insight into potential observational signatures of the ULDM in merger events, leading to possible constraints on the existence and density of dark matter distribution in galaxies.

Constraining superluminal Einstein-Æther gravity through gravitational memory

Every emission of radiation in gravity also includes a nonwavelike component that leaves a permanent change in proper distances of the spacetime it travels through. This phenomenon is known as gravitational displacement memory. Building up on a recently developed computation framework that harnesses Isaacson's insights on a fundamental definition of gravitational waves, we compute the leading displacement memory formula in Einstein-Aether gravity. Our analysis represents the first direct calculation of gravitational memory in a metric theory with nontrivial asymptotic vector field value. We find that an emission of scalar and vector aether waves at a propagation speed greater than the speed of tensor radiation features unprotected causal directions with a priori unbound memory build-up. Based on the results and the existing constraint of luminally propagating tensor waves, we conjecture a stringent exclusion of the superluminal parameter space of Einstein-Aether gravity.

Gravitational Memory in Generalized Proca Gravity

We investigate the gravitational memory effect in the full Generalized Proca gravity, the most general metric theory including a gravitational Proca field with derivative self-interactions that still maintains second-order equations of motion. Building on our previous works on memory in other massless and massive metric theories, we extend a unified framework for computing displacement memory and apply it to Generalized Proca gravity. We identify two non-trivial physically distinct classes of background conditions of Generalized Proca theory within the assumption of asymptotic flatness: a Lorentz-invariant but massive case, and a Lorentz-violating, massless case. The former exhibits dispersive scalar and vector modes and allows a Horndeski-like treatment of memory, while the latter resembles the asymptotic dynamics of Einstein-Æther theory including the same Lorentz-breaking effects on displacement memory. In both cases, we derive the fully gauge invariant and dynamical second order action, derive the effective stress-energy tensor and study its contribution to the memory integral. We highlight the distinction between phase and group velocity in the tensor memory formula sourced by dispersive propagating modes. Finally, we re-emphasize how observational constraints on Lorentz violation may be imposed by the structure of the memory signal.
