Bounds on the maximum number of limit cycles of piecewise linear Lienard systems I. The continuous case

Abstract

This paper concerns the planar Liénard system \(\dot x=y-F(x),\ \dot y=-x\), where \(F(x)\) is a continuous piecewise linear function with exactly \(n\) fold points. Tonnelier [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 63 (2002)] conjectured that the maximum number of limit cycles of the system is \(n\) when \(F\) has exactly \(n\) fold points. The conjecture was confirmed for \(n=1\) and \(n=2\) in [J. Nonlinear Sci. 25 (2015)] and [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 113 (2026)], respectively, whereas the case \(n\ge3\) remained open. In this paper, we show that the maximal number of limit cycles is at least \(|3n-4|\) for \(n\in\mathbb N^+\), thereby disproving Tonnelier's conjecture for \(n\ge3\). The proof reveals a unified multiscale perturbation mechanism underlying the creation and coexistence of multiple limit cycles. Moreover, we prove that the number of limit cycles admits the finite upper bound \(2^{28(n+1)^2}\).

Selector form of Weaver's conjecture, Feichtinger's conjecture, and frame sparsification

We show an extension of a probabilistic result of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava, which resolved the Kadison-Singer problem, for block diagonal positive semidefinite random matrices. We use this result to show several selector results, which generalize their partition counterparts. This includes a selector form of Weaver's KS$_r$ conjecture for block diagonal trace class operators, which extends a selector result for Bessel sequences, or equivalently rank one matrices, due to Londner and the author. We also show a selector variant of Feichtinger's conjecture for a (possibly infinite) collection of Bessel sequences, extending earlier results for a single Bessel sequence. We prove a generalization of the $R_ε$ conjecture of Casazza, Tremain, and Vershynin for infinite collection of equal norm Bessel sequences. In particular, our selector result yields a conjectured asymptotically optimal bound for a single Bessel sequence in terms of Riesz sequence tightness parameter. We establish an iterated selector form of Weaver's KS$_2$ conjecture and show its applications. This includes a solution of an open problem on nearly unit norm Parseval frames of exponentials, which was posed by Londner and the author. We generalize a discretization result for continuous frames by Freeman and Speegle in two ways. First, we extend their result from the setting of rank one operators to positive trace operator valued measures. Second, we establish a nearly tight discretization of bounded continuous Parseval frames. In particular, our selector result yields an improvement of the result of Nitzan, Olevskii, and Ulanovskii and implies the existence of nearly tight exponential frames for unbounded sets with an explicit control on their frame redundancy.

Revisiting Positive Exponent power weighted Stein-Weiss inequalities in $L^1$

We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions on input functions for a family of positive exponent power weight $L^1$ Stein-Weiss inequalities. Earlier work by De Nápoli and Picon showed that a certain cocanceling condition was necessary and sufficient in $L^1$, but it was unknown if this condition remained necessary in the positive exponent power weight setting. This present article identifies weaker necessary conditions for positive exponent power weights, some of which were shown to be sufficient for positive, non-integer exponent power weights in the author's earlier work.

Fourier Restriction Beyond Dimension Data: A Multiscale Moment Criterion

We establish an exact Fourier restriction criterion for a class of weighted Moran measures. Assuming uniformly bounded one-level frame bounds, we prove that, for every \(s>2\), the measure itself already detects the full extension estimate: \(L^2(μ)\to L^s(\mathbb R)\) extension holds if and only if \(\widehatμ\in L^s(\mathbb R)\), equivalently, if and only if the one-level Fourier moments \(G_{s,n}\) are summable, where $G_{s,n}$ is the $s$th moment of the nonzero Fourier coefficients of the $n$th digit law. The sufficient direction is obtained from a finite-frame stability estimate and its multiscale iteration, while necessity follows from disjoint resonant frequency grids. This gives, in particular, an exact formula for the critical restriction exponent and a precise criterion for endpoint attainment. The criterion reveals that the optimal restriction range is not determined by standard Fourier or dimensional data. We construct singular continuous spectral Moran measures with the same scales, digit cardinalities, exponential spectrum, and maximal nonzero Fourier coefficients. They also satisfy the same global Fourier decay bound, which is sharp along the same sequence of resonant frequencies, yet their critical restriction exponents are different. More generally, after fixing the summability rate of the maximal Fourier coefficients, we determine the optimal interval of possible restriction exponents and show that, at every interior critical exponent, the same fixed data allow both attainment and failure of the critical endpoint. These measures may simultaneously have $ \dim_{\mathrm F}^θμ=θ$ and $ D_q(μ)=1,$for all admissible $θ$ and $q$, and pointwise local dimension one everywhere on their supports.
