Ringdown analysis of GW250114 with RingCWB

Abstract

The binary black hole merger GW250114, the loudest gravitational-wave signal detected to date, offers an opportunity to perform a precise test of Einstein's general relativity (GR). Its exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio enables accurate measurements of the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) and properties of the remnant black hole. In this work, we present a ringdown analysis of GW250114 using the RingCWB algorithm. We measure the dominant $(2,2,0)$ QNM along with its first overtone and constrain the fractional deviations in frequency and damping time from their GR-predicted values, finding $δf_{220} = 0.004_{-0.023}^{+0.022}$ and $δτ_{220} = 0.010_{-0.087}^{+0.096}$ , both consistent with zero within the quoted uncertainties. These results represent stringent constraints on deviations from GR. The analysis also places tight constraints on the remnant spin, consistent with a binary black hole formed through stellar evolution.

Relativistic second gradient theory of continuous media

Variational Relativity is a framework developed by Souriau in the sixties to better formulate General Relativity and its classical limit\,: Classical Continuum Mechanics. It has been used, for instance, to formulate elasticity from a Lagrangian (or Action) in General Relativity. In that case, two primary variables are involved, the universe (Lorentzian) metric $g$ and the matter field $Ψ$. A Lagrangian density depending on the 1-jet of these variables is then introduced which must satisfy the principle of General Covariance. Souriau proved in 1958 that under these hypotheses, the Lagrangian density depends only on the punctual value of the matter field $Ψ$ and of a secondary variable $\mathbf{K}$, the conformation, an invariant of the diffeomorphism group, which is the Relativistic analog of the inverse of the right Cauchy--Green tensor. In the present work, an extension of Souriau's results to a second order gradient theory in General Relativity is presented. Accordingly, new higher order diffeomorphisms invariants are found. Their classical limits are calculated, showing that the 3-dimensional Continuum Mechanics second gradient theory can be derived from such a relativistic theory. Some of these invariants converge to objective quantities in the Galilean limit (such as the fundamental variables of finite strain second gradient theory, modeling solids), others to non-objective quantities (such as those encountered in the modeling of fluids): objectivity is thus natural for the constitutive variables of solids and unnatural for those of fluids. The present work contributes to clarify the theoretical foundation of higher gradient Continuum Mechanics theory.

Gauge Theoretic Signal Processing I: The Commutative Formalism for Single-Detector Adaptive Whitening

We present a geometric framework for adaptive whitening in gravitational-wave detectors, reformulating the problem from a sequence of spectral factorizations to parallel transport on a principal bundle. We identify the whitening filter as a section over the manifold of power spectra and derive the minimum-phase connection as the unique geometric structure that enforces signal causality while preserving signal-to-noise ratio. This construction yields a rigorous definition of geometric drift, a coordinate-independent scalar measuring the intrinsic instability of the detector noise floor. The central result is the flatness theorem, which proves that the curvature of the connection vanishes for scalar fields. This establishes a holonomic update law, guaranteeing that the optimal filter correction is path-independent and determined solely by the instantaneous noise state, free from geometric phase or hysteresis. This framework unifies the static theory of Wiener-Hopf factorization with the dynamic requirements of real-time control, providing a rigorous certification for the stability of zero-latency calibration routines and establishing a foundation for gauge-theoretic signal processing (GTSP) in next-generation detector networks. In the wider context of gravitational-wave astronomy, this result governs the latency and fidelity of low-latency searches and provides the single-detector foundation for the multi-detector network extensions of the framework. The update law is integrated into a production matched-filter pipeline and validated on detector data in a companion paper.

Photon Surfaces in Higher-Curvature Gravity: Implications for Quasinormal Modes and Gravitational Lensing

Effective field theory (EFT) provides a systematic framework to describe deviations from general relativity through higher-curvature corrections to the gravitational action. In this work, we investigate test-field quasinormal modes (QNMs) and weak and strong gravitational lensing in static, spherically symmetric spacetimes with higher-curvature corrections, focusing on null geodesics near the photon sphere. Using the strong deflection limit formalism developed by Bozza, we derive the logarithmic divergence of the deflection angle and separate the divergent and regular contributions. We normalize the dimensionful EFT couplings by appropriate powers of the horizon radius $r_s=2M$ and work perturbatively in the resulting dimensionless parameters. We analyze how higher-curvature corrections modify the photon sphere radius, the critical impact parameter, and the coefficients governing the strong deflection expansion. We further examine the corresponding effects on test-field QNMs in the eikonal regime. Our results provide a systematic characterization of how higher-curvature EFT corrections modify null geodesics, strong gravitational lensing, and test-field QNMs, and clarify the relation between EFT couplings and characteristic properties of the surrounding spacetime geometry.
