Sampling SU(N) gauge theory on a 2D lattice from independent plaquettes via holonomies and corner reweighting

Abstract

In the Wilson formulation of lattice gauge theory, the fundamental degrees of freedom are group-valued link variables, while the action is a sum over the trace of the plaquettes, the smallest Wilson loops. For generative sampling methods such as normalizing flows, this poses a challenge: the distribution of an individual plaquette is easy to model, but mapping sampled plaquettes to the links is the obstruction. We explore a statistical way around this in two dimensions for the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge theory with the Wilson plaquette action. The action can be written in terms of holonomy variables, which determine the links once a consistency condition at the four corners of an extended lattice is satisfied. Using a boundary condition that only affects the holonomies, we trade this consistency condition for a conditional sampling problem, which reduces to sampling $X,Y\in\mathrm{SU}(N)$ given the group commutator $Z=XYX^\dagger Y^\dagger$, where $Z\in\mathrm{SU}(N)$ depends on the four corners. Plaquettes are sampled independently, and the resulting configurations carry weights due to the additional conditional sampling. We obtain the density of $Z$, which determines these weights, in closed form for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$. A normalizing flow models the single-plaquette distribution for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$; for the group-commutator problem we use a closed-form sampler for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and a trained normalizing flow for $\mathrm{SU}(3)$. In our tests on $2\times2$ and $32\times32$ lattices at two couplings each, per-plaquette acceptance rates exceed $99\%$ and the effective sample size of the final weights is moderate, typically above one half.

Mass as pairing: an explicit Majorana mass on half of a generation does not seesaw in symmetric mass generation

A fermion mass pairs a field with a partner of conjugate charge: elementary (Higgs-Dirac), self-conjugate (seesaw) or a three-fermion composite (symmetric mass generation, SMG). We give half of a Spin(10)-like generation an explicit Majorana mass in a four-dimensional SMG model and ask what the other half does in a phase with no condensate. With the source on, every mass-type term of the unsourced half averages to zero under the symmetry group of the sourced action, so a light mass term, and a seesaw's light-heavy mixing, requires a spontaneously broken symmetry; exact on the lattice and a general proposition. The source is colour-democratic (a Delta_R-type mass on every flavour's right-handed taste doublet); the single-nu_R split lies outside the positivity class used but inside the symmetry statement. Measured up to 8^4: (i) in the symmetric-gap phase, with the source screened to at most 1.1% of free, the unsourced half's single-fermion readout stays at 0.3% of free while its pair susceptibility rises from 0.2% to 1.2-1.7% at h=2; on like mode sets it falls with the volume, on (4^4,8^4) no inequivalent light mass channel grows faster than free, and symmetry breaking is not resolved at L<=8; (ii) at the critical point the explicit mass collapses the critical sigma channel and moves the light half toward free as a saturating crossover, not a power law; direction tests (MIXED by their pre-registered letter) are consistent with a critical coupling rising with the mass; y_c(h) is not located. Pole versus zero of the light propagator at p->0 is not measured. The outcomes are readings after pre-registered tests that mostly returned no verdict. Also: no first-order signature of the merged transition at L<=8, a Z_4-odd response handed to a lattice composite, and flavour democracy of the positivity class. Every claim has an evidence class and a runnable check.

A gauge-invariant measure for lattice chiral fermions

We nonperturbatively construct a gauge-invariant measure for overlap fermions on four-dimensional Euclidean lattices in a class of nonabelian chiral gauge theories that includes the Standard Model. On admissible gauge fields, comparing chiral projectors at successive lattice spacings yields an exponentially local current and establishes the global properties needed for Lüscher's reconstruction of a smooth, gauge-invariant fermion measure. This provides a candidate nonperturbative lattice definition of the Standard Model.

Scale Setting and Strong Coupling Determination in the Gradient Flow Scheme for 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We report on the determination of the gradient flow scales in $N_f=2+1$ QCD using highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles generated by the HotQCD Collaboration for bare gauge couplings ranging from $β= 6.423$ to $8.400$. Using bottomonium splittings, kaon decay constant, the decay constant of unmixed $η_s$ meson and the $ϕ$ meson mass we obtained the values of the gradient flow scales in physical units, $\sqrt{t_0} = 0.14446 (76)$ fm and $w_0 = 0.17429 (83)$ fm. Using the same physical inputs we revisit the determination of the potential $r_1$ scale and find $r_1 = 0.3118(26)$~fm. As a byproduct of our study we obtain the running of the gauge coupling in the gradient flow scheme. We find that within the uncertainties the running of the gradient flow coupling obtained on the lattice is compatible with the perturbative results up to flow radius $\sqrt{8 τ_F}=0.15$ fm.
