Infinitely many Nielsen classes in mapping class groups and free-group automorphism groups

Abstract

We formulate a root-conjugation criterion for producing generating pairs and detecting Nielsen inequivalence by a polynomial symmetric-trace invariant. The method simultaneously treats mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups. We prove that $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_g)$, $g\ge2$, and $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$, $\mathrm{SAut}(F_n)$, $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ and $\mathrm{SOut}(F_n)$, $n\ge3$, have countably infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. A sign parameter unifies the full and special automorphism-group constructions, with common generation arguments and trace polynomials. The same homology representations give the corresponding results for $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z})$, $g\ge2$, and $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$, $n\ge3$. This answers Hirose--Monden's low-genus question and Kapovich's Question 8.1.

On rational orbits in some prehomogeneous vector spaces

Let $k$ be a field with characteristic different from $2$. In this paper, we describe the $k$-rational orbit spaces in some irreducible prehomogeneous vector spaces $(G,V)$, where $G$ is a connected reductive algebraic group and $V$ is an irreducible rational representation of $G$ with a Zariski dense open orbit over the field $k$. We prove that all composition algebras over $k$ appear as orbit spaces in some of these representations associated to the group $Sp_{6}$. This leads to a parametric description of the reduced Freudenthal algebras of dimensions $6$ and $9$ over $k$ (if $\text{char}(k)\neq 2,3$). In this process, we provide a construction of the irreducible representation of $Sp_{6}$ with dimension $14$ from the split octonion algebra. We also get the orbit decomposition in the irreducible representation of dimension $7$ and the corresponding octonion algebra of any simple connected group of type $G_{2}$, and a parametrization of the isotopes of any Freudenthal algebra over $k$.

Hyperbolicity and obstructions to PL actions of the circle

We prove the following ``Torus Trichotomy Theorem'': every finitely generated subgroup of $\pls$ is either virtually free, a central extension of a cocompact Fuchsian group by a finite cyclic group, or a one-ended, non-acylindrically-hyperbolic group containing $\mathbb{Z}^2$. In particular, we obtain the ``free or surface'' alternative for word-hyperbolic groups of PL homeomorphisms of the circle.

On embeddings of the difference graph of the intersection power graph and the power graph

The power graph of a finite group $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if one is a power of the other. The intersection power graph of a finite group $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices $x$, $y$ are adjacent if $\langle x\rangle \cap \langle y \rangle \neq \{e\}$. The difference graph $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the difference of the intersection power graph and power graph with all isolated vertices removed. We characterized all the finite nilpotent groups $G$ except $2$-group such that the difference graph is planar. Further, we determine all the finite nilpotent groups whose difference graph has genus at most $2$. Moreover, we prove that there does not exist any finite group whose difference graph is projective planar.
