Chiral Central Charge from Real-Space Twist Operator Correlator

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed substantial progress in the entanglement-based characterization of quantum phases of matter, with growing interest in real-space formulas due to their theoretical and experimental relevance. For two-dimensional gapped quantum systems, we propose a universal real-space formula for the chiral central charge based on the twist-operator correlator $Z_{g,h}=\langleψ^{(N)}\rvert\mathcal{T}_A(g)\mathcal{T}_B(h)\mathcal{T}_C(g)\mathcal{T}_C(h)\lvertψ^{(N)}\rangle$, where $\lvertψ^{(N)}\rangle=\lvertψ\rangle^{\otimes N}$ is the $N$-copy state and $g,h\in S_N$ are permutations. The twist operator $\mathcal{T}_R(g)$ permutes the $N$ replicas within region $R$ according to $g$. For pairs $(g,h)$ satisfying the spherical condition, we show that the phase of the correlator is determined by the chiral central charge $\mathfrak{c}_{-}$ through $Z_{g,h}/\left\lvert Z_{g,h}\right\rvert=(θ_gθ_h/θ_{gh})^{\mathfrak{c}_{-}}$, where $θ_g^{\mathfrak{c}_{-}}$ is the topological spin of the twist defect labeled by $g\in S_N$. The construction applies to both bosonic and fermionic systems. We derive the formula within a field-theoretic framework under suitable assumptions and further test it numerically in microscopic lattice models. Our results establish a universal connection between real-space entanglement structures and the chiral central charge, providing a systematic framework for characterizing chiral topological phases directly on the lattice.

Interaction-driven quantum criticality in two-dimensional quadratic band crossing semimetals with time-reversal symmetry breaking

We present a systematic investigation of all sixteen marginally relevant fermion-fermion interactions in two-dimensional time-reversal symmetry-breaking kagomé semimetals hosting a quadratic band crossing point. Employing a momentum-shell renormalization group approach that treats every interaction on equal footing, we derive energy-dependent flow equations that capture the hierarchical evolutions of interaction parameters. Our analysis begins by tracking the energy-dependent flows of fermion-fermion interactions. The interaction couplings go towards divergence at a critical energy scale, signaling quantum critical behavior. Such behavior is characterized by a certain fixed point (FP) whose characteristics depends intimately on structural parameters $d_{0,1,2,3}$ that cluster the microscopic model into rotationally symmetric and asymmetric cases. Then, we identify two stable FPs in the rotationally symmetric and nine additional FPs in asymmetric case dubbed FP$_{1-10}$. Their boundary conditions are approximately demarcated and established by linear and plane fitting techniques in the structural parameter space. Furthermore, we examine distinct interaction-driven instabilities nearby these FPs by incorporating the relevant external source terms and computing their susceptibilities. It indicates that the charge density wave and superconductivity become dominant at FP$_{2,4,5,6,8}$ and FP$_{1,9,10}$, while the $x$-current and bond density prevail at FP$_3$ and FP$_7$, respectively. In addition to these leading states, several underlying subordinate instabilities are presented as well. These results would be helpful to further study the low-energy critical behavior in 2D kagomé QBCP and related materials.

$^{23}$Na-NMR study on the one-dimensional superoxide spin-chain compound NaO$_2$

We report $^{23}$Na-NMR study of the alkali superoxide NaO$_2$, a candidate one-dimensional quantum spin system. The Knight shift, linewidth, and spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ were investigated down to 0.3 K in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Below $T_{\rm S3} =$ 34 K, $1/T_1$ exhibits thermally activated behavior, indicating the opening of a spin gap of $Δ(10.1 {\rm T}) \simeq$ 38.0 K and $Δ(3.55 {\rm T}) \simeq$ 46 K, The hyperfine coupling constant shows a sudden reduction across the structural transition at $T_{\rm S2} \simeq$ 195 K, reflecting the development the pronounced one-dimensionality in the elctron structure. These results provide microscopic evidence that NaO$_2$ is a rare $π$-orbital-based one-dimensional spin chain that exhibits a spin-gapped ground state, consistent with a spin-Peierls-like instability.

Multipartite entanglement hidden in vector-chiral correlations of spin-1/2 chains

Characterizing entanglement in quantum materials through experimentally accessible observables remains a central challenge. Quantum Fisher information associated with sums of one-site spin operators provides one route by linking entanglement to measurable magnetic response functions. Extending this approach to local composite observables requires new entanglement bounds. Here we establish a rigorous bound for the total nearest-neighbour vector chirality of periodic spin-$1/2$ chains with an even number of sites. The quantum Fisher information per spin cannot exceed $k+1$ for any $k$-producible state, so exceeding this bound certifies entanglement depth of at least $k+1$. Combining infinite density-matrix renormalization group and thermal pure quantum-state calculations, we demonstrate multipartite entanglement encoded in vector-chiral correlations at zero and finite temperatures in an extended $J_1$-$J_2$ XXZ chain. The spin-current coupling between vector chirality and electric polarization offers, in principle, access to this witness through dielectric loss spectroscopy in multiferroic magnets, extending entanglement diagnostics beyond dipolar spin correlations.
