RIS-Assisted Reliability Maximization for URLLC in Upper Mid-Band 6G Networks

Abstract

In sixth-generation (6G) networks, supporting ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services imposes stringent requirements on reliability, latency, and efficient resource utilization. The upper mid-band (FR3) spectrum has emerged as a promising candidate due to its favorable trade-off between coverage and bandwidth availability. However, achieving high reliability in dense deployments remains challenging due to interference and propagation impairments. To address these challenges, this paper investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted network operating in the FR3 band. We formulate a joint transmit power allocation and user equipment (UE)-RIS association problem to maximize network reliability under finite blocklength constraints. The resulting problem is nonconvex and combinatorial due to interference coupling and binary association variables. To solve this problem efficiently, we propose a multiphase resource allocation framework that integrates a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based power optimization scheme with a matching theory-based UE-RIS association algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms greedy and random baselines and achieves near-optimal performance close to the exhaustive search scheme.

Gridless Parameter Estimation in Partly Calibrated Rectangular Arrays

Spatial frequency estimation from a mixture of noisy sinusoids finds applications in various fields. While subspace-based methods offer cost-effective super-resolution parameter estimation, they demand precise array calibration, posing challenges for large antennas. In contrast, sparsity-based approaches outperform subspace methods, especially in scenarios with limited snapshots or correlated sources. This study focuses on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using a partly calibrated rectangular array with fully calibrated subarrays. A gridless sparse formulation leveraging shift invariances in the array is developed, yielding two competitive algorithms under the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and successive convex approximation frameworks, respectively. Numerical simulations show the superior error performance of our proposed method, particularly in highly correlated scenarios, compared to the conventional subspace-based methods. It is demonstrated that the proposed formulation can also be adopted in the fully calibrated case to improve the robustness of the subspace-based methods to the source correlation. Furthermore, we provide a generalization of the proposed method to a more challenging case where a part of the sensors is unobservable due to failures.

Semantic Sensing: Toward a Task-Oriented Paradigm

Sensing and communication are fundamental enablers of next-generation networks. While communication technologies have advanced significantly, the potential of sensing beyond conventional parameter estimation remains far from fully explored. To address these limitations, we propose semantic sensing (SemS), a framework that extends task-oriented sensing through explicit modeling and recovery of task-relevant environmental information. Specifically, we mathematically formulate how transmit waveforms and receiver processing jointly support the recovery of task-relevant semantics, thereby establishing SemS as a semantics-oriented transceiver design. Within this architecture, we formulate an information-theoretic objective that guides the sensing pipeline to maximize task-relevant information extraction under resource constraints. To solve this optimization problem, we develop a deep learning (DL)-based framework that jointly designs transmit waveform parameters and receiver representations. The framework is implemented in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, featuring a semantic encoder that employs differentiable pilot selection to select informative time--frequency resources. At the receiver, we design a shared semantic decoder that estimates three semantic attributes, namely object category, proximity, and radial motion, to support target classification and approach warning through predefined task mappings. We also consider continuous target range estimation as a special case in which the semantic state and task output coincide. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed semantic pilot design achieves superior classification accuracy and approach-warning Macro-F1 compared to reconstruction-based baselines, particularly under constrained resource budgets.

Toward Service-Balanced ISAC: From Coupled RAN to De-Coupled RAN

Sixth-generation (6G) applications require radio access networks (RANs) to support reliable communication and seamless sensing across their operating regions. In coupled RAN deployments, shared downlink transmitting and uplink receiving sites constrain the network's ability to accommodate asymmetric links and different sensing geometries. De-Coupled RAN (DC-RAN) separates these functions, allowing independently deployed and coordinated base stations to extend uplink and downlink communication and sensing coverage. How this flexibility translates into balanced communication and sensing services, however, remains insufficiently explored. This article revisits the evolution from coupled to DC-RAN from the perspective of service-balanced integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). It examines how architectural choices affect the availability of both services, with communication-sensing coverage symmetry capturing their spatial alignment under application-specific quality requirements. Practical challenges include preserving communication consistency, maintaining sensing continuity, and coordinating distributed resources. Two case studies illustrate how DC-RAN can support coverage symmetry alongside consistent communication, and how complementary observations can sustain continuous and accurate sensing. These examples inform a discussion of future research toward service-balanced ISAC.
