Fundamental CRB-Rate Tradeoff of Rydberg Atomic Receivers for Integrated Sensing and Communication

Abstract

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key technology for next generation wireless networks, requiring highly sensitive, compact receiver front ends with multiband coverage. Rydberg atomic receivers (RARs) provide a promising architecture that satisfies these requirements owing to their high sensitivity and continuous frequency tuning capability. Unlike in classical ISAC systems utilizing orthogonal resource allocation, executing concurrent multi band tasks within a single atomic ensemble relies on shared energy state transitions. Owing to this shared structure, the communication and sensing tradeoff in RAR-based ISAC introduces an atomic-response tradeoff beyond the classical subspace and deterministic-random tradeoffs. This paper studies a multi-branch RAR (MB-RAR) architecture for joint communication and radar sensing. By solving the five level Lindblad master equation at the local oscillator (LO) biased operating point and linearizing the communication and sensing radio frequency (RF) signals as small perturbations, we obtain the double-sideband dynamic signal response of the MB-RAR. The model reveals two intrinsic constraints. First, increasing the coupling laser strength broadens the response bandwidth but can weaken the atomic response. Second, strengthening one branch's LO can suppress the other branch's conversion gain through the shared Rydberg state, even when the latter's LO bias remains fixed, which is termed the inter band gain inhibition (IBGI). Based on these mechanisms, we formulate the achievable Cramér--Rao bound (CRB)-rate region and develop a rate-constrained joint search over coupling strength and LO power allocation. Numerical results validate the proposed response model and show that joint optimization provides a more complete characterization of the achievable CRB-rate region.

Gridless Parameter Estimation in Partly Calibrated Rectangular Arrays

Spatial frequency estimation from a mixture of noisy sinusoids finds applications in various fields. While subspace-based methods offer cost-effective super-resolution parameter estimation, they demand precise array calibration, posing challenges for large antennas. In contrast, sparsity-based approaches outperform subspace methods, especially in scenarios with limited snapshots or correlated sources. This study focuses on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using a partly calibrated rectangular array with fully calibrated subarrays. A gridless sparse formulation leveraging shift invariances in the array is developed, yielding two competitive algorithms under the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and successive convex approximation frameworks, respectively. Numerical simulations show the superior error performance of our proposed method, particularly in highly correlated scenarios, compared to the conventional subspace-based methods. It is demonstrated that the proposed formulation can also be adopted in the fully calibrated case to improve the robustness of the subspace-based methods to the source correlation. Furthermore, we provide a generalization of the proposed method to a more challenging case where a part of the sensors is unobservable due to failures.

Cascaded Multiwire-PLC/Multiple-VLC System: Characterization and Performance

This paper proposes a cascaded multiwire-power line communication (PLC)/multiple-visible light communication (VLC) system. This hybrid architecture offers low installation cost, enhanced performance, practical feasibility, and a wide range of applications. Novel analytical expressions are derived for key statistics and outage probability, bit error probability, and ergodic channel capacity metrics. Furthermore, the analytical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations, with several performance curves presented under various channel and PLC/VLC system parameters. All expressions derived in this work are original and have not been previously published. Our proposed system proves feasible for smart environments, green communication systems, internet of things networks, industrial environments, and next-generation networks.

Semantic Sensing: Toward a Task-Oriented Paradigm

Sensing and communication are fundamental enablers of next-generation networks. While communication technologies have advanced significantly, the potential of sensing beyond conventional parameter estimation remains far from fully explored. To address these limitations, we propose semantic sensing (SemS), a framework that extends task-oriented sensing through explicit modeling and recovery of task-relevant environmental information. Specifically, we mathematically formulate how transmit waveforms and receiver processing jointly support the recovery of task-relevant semantics, thereby establishing SemS as a semantics-oriented transceiver design. Within this architecture, we formulate an information-theoretic objective that guides the sensing pipeline to maximize task-relevant information extraction under resource constraints. To solve this optimization problem, we develop a deep learning (DL)-based framework that jointly designs transmit waveform parameters and receiver representations. The framework is implemented in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, featuring a semantic encoder that employs differentiable pilot selection to select informative time--frequency resources. At the receiver, we design a shared semantic decoder that estimates three semantic attributes, namely object category, proximity, and radial motion, to support target classification and approach warning through predefined task mappings. We also consider continuous target range estimation as a special case in which the semantic state and task output coincide. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed semantic pilot design achieves superior classification accuracy and approach-warning Macro-F1 compared to reconstruction-based baselines, particularly under constrained resource budgets.
