Medium modification of pseudoscalar meson structure: Distribution amplitudes and parton distribution functions

Abstract

In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of the in-medium properties and internal structure of pseudoscalar mesons within the light-front quark model (LFQM), employing both Gaussian and power-law (PL) wave functions. We incorporate in-medium quark properties obtained from the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model into the LFQM, thereby providing a unified description in terms of quark degrees of freedom. We investigate the distribution amplitudes (DAs) and parton distribution functions (PDFs) of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $D^{\pm}$, and $B^{\pm}$ mesons in symmetric nuclear matter. We find that the evolved in-medium pion DA and PDF are strongly suppressed at intermediate $x$, indicating substantial medium-induced modifications to the meson structure. The signs and magnitudes of the modified Gegenbauer coefficients $a_n'$, the parameter $ξ$, and the Mellin moments of the DAs and PDFs in nuclear matter are found to be consistent with other theoretical predictions. In particular, the second Gegenbauer coefficient of the pion DA, $a_2^π$, increases substantially with nuclear density, from $0.096$ ($0.057$) in vacuum to $0.232$ ($0.202$) at normal nuclear density for the Gaussian (PL) wave function, respectively. This increase indicates a broader pion DA and an enhanced second Gegenbauer moment in the nuclear medium. We further calculate the pion PDF ratio $R_{ρ/0}^π$ and find that its $x$ dependence exhibits a behavior qualitatively similar to the observed European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, highlighting the important role of QCD evolution in shaping the medium-modified partonic structure. Finally, we compare the calculated free-space $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ DAs with available free-space lattice QCD results and find reasonable agreement.

0.5 eV QCD Axion Cosmology

The best available determination of the present expansion rate of the universe using late-universe observations, by the SH0ES collaboration in 2025, differs by more than seven standard deviations from the value of the Hubble constant determined by the Planck collaboration in 2018 using early-universe observations and the standard cold dark matter cosmology with cosmological constant, a discrepancy known as the Hubble tension. Within a spatially flat, isotropic, and homogeneous expanding-universe solution of the field equations of general relativity with cosmological constant, the SH0ES value for the Hubble constant implies roughly twice as many baryons as the standard cosmology, provided that one retains the Planck values for the energy density of cold dark matter in the present universe and for the cosmological constant. A novel cosmology is proposed --- in terms of cooling dark matter made of quantum chromodynamic (QCD) axions with present number density six times that of the photons in the cosmic microwave background --- which realizes this straightforward, doubled-baryons scenario for resolving the Hubble tension.

Very Special Relativity in Accelerated Frames: Non-relativistic Effects in Gravitational Spectroscopy of Ultracold Neutrons

In this paper, we investigate the phenomenology of fermionic systems in uniform gravitational fields within the framework of Very Special Relativity (VSR). We focus on the case of gravitational spectroscopy with ultracold neutrons, explored in experiments like \emph{q}\textsc{Bounce}. Calculating the leading ($c^0$) and next-to-leading ($c^{-1}$) order corrections to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian in an accelerated frame, we obtain the perturbed fermionic energy spectrum. At leading order, we do not find any modifications except for a trivial mass shift, thus preserving the equivalence between inertial and gravitational mass and particle-antiparticle sectors. The next-to-leading order corrections, instead, introduce time-dependent anisotropic contributions depending on the preferred spatial direction in VSR, and can then be used to probe novel Lorentz-violating signatures. Taking \emph{q}\textsc{Bounce} sensitivity as a benchmark, we derive a first rough constraint for the neutron VSR parameter. Finally, we suggest alternative spin-flipping setups to better probe VSR effects and foresee potential future research directions.

Non-anomalous axions: lessons from the Majoron

We show that when an anomalous and a non-anomalous global symmetries are spontaneously and simultaneously broken, the resulting Nambu--Goldstone boson is associated with the non-anomalous one. Applied to the Majoron, this implies that its underlying symmetry is $B-L$ rather than $L$, naturally resolving the domain wall problem. This result further demonstrates that effective couplings of the form $a \, F \, \tilde{F}$ do not uniquely indicate an anomalous origin, allowing the detection of non-anomalous Nambu--Goldstone bosons in searches for axion--gauge boson interactions.
