Flavor decoherence and washout timing in nonthermal leptogenesis after inflation

Abstract

We investigate why changing the heavy-neutrino mass hierarchy can reverse the baryon asymmetry in nonthermal leptogenesis after hilltop inflation. Along the mass trajectory studied here, lowering the mass of the lighter state, \(N_1\), reverses the final asymmetry while leaving the dominant injection from \(N_2\) decays nearly unchanged. The mass change primarily delays \(N_1\) washout relative to electron--muon flavor decoherence; at fixed source and background, translating the washout history while preserving its shape and integrated strength reproduces more than 99\% of the yield changes from the nonthermal \(N_2\) source at two physical target masses. Decomposing the \(N_2\) CP source shows that the projector-aligned component remains positive under both washout histories, whereas the initially trace-free component reverses its propagated contribution and accounts for about 99.7\% of the timing contrast in the fixed-source comparison. Rapid damping of \(eμ\) flavor coherence largely removes this contrast, while rapid chemical equilibration does not. Later washout therefore acts on a more decohered flavor state, reducing the positive \(eμ\) contribution and allowing negative diagonal contributions to determine the final sign. At a mass recomputed to reproduce the observed baryon yield, a 10\% increase of the muon collision operator reverses the sign in a fixed-input sensitivity test.

0.5 eV QCD Axion Cosmology

The best available determination of the present expansion rate of the universe using late-universe observations, by the SH0ES collaboration in 2025, differs by more than seven standard deviations from the value of the Hubble constant determined by the Planck collaboration in 2018 using early-universe observations and the standard cold dark matter cosmology with cosmological constant, a discrepancy known as the Hubble tension. Within a spatially flat, isotropic, and homogeneous expanding-universe solution of the field equations of general relativity with cosmological constant, the SH0ES value for the Hubble constant implies roughly twice as many baryons as the standard cosmology, provided that one retains the Planck values for the energy density of cold dark matter in the present universe and for the cosmological constant. A novel cosmology is proposed --- in terms of cooling dark matter made of quantum chromodynamic (QCD) axions with present number density six times that of the photons in the cosmic microwave background --- which realizes this straightforward, doubled-baryons scenario for resolving the Hubble tension.

Very Special Relativity in Accelerated Frames: Non-relativistic Effects in Gravitational Spectroscopy of Ultracold Neutrons

In this paper, we investigate the phenomenology of fermionic systems in uniform gravitational fields within the framework of Very Special Relativity (VSR). We focus on the case of gravitational spectroscopy with ultracold neutrons, explored in experiments like \emph{q}\textsc{Bounce}. Calculating the leading ($c^0$) and next-to-leading ($c^{-1}$) order corrections to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian in an accelerated frame, we obtain the perturbed fermionic energy spectrum. At leading order, we do not find any modifications except for a trivial mass shift, thus preserving the equivalence between inertial and gravitational mass and particle-antiparticle sectors. The next-to-leading order corrections, instead, introduce time-dependent anisotropic contributions depending on the preferred spatial direction in VSR, and can then be used to probe novel Lorentz-violating signatures. Taking \emph{q}\textsc{Bounce} sensitivity as a benchmark, we derive a first rough constraint for the neutron VSR parameter. Finally, we suggest alternative spin-flipping setups to better probe VSR effects and foresee potential future research directions.

Non-anomalous axions: lessons from the Majoron

We show that when an anomalous and a non-anomalous global symmetries are spontaneously and simultaneously broken, the resulting Nambu--Goldstone boson is associated with the non-anomalous one. Applied to the Majoron, this implies that its underlying symmetry is $B-L$ rather than $L$, naturally resolving the domain wall problem. This result further demonstrates that effective couplings of the form $a \, F \, \tilde{F}$ do not uniquely indicate an anomalous origin, allowing the detection of non-anomalous Nambu--Goldstone bosons in searches for axion--gauge boson interactions.
